Let's extend this analogy a bit further:

What if bicycles cost at least twice as much as cars, you could only use
them on poorly maintained dirt tracks (and there are gaps in the coverage 
where you have to either pick up the bike and walk (HF) or put it in the
boot of a car and drive past it (internet gateways)), and due to the law
you weren't allowed to visit any of the destinations which you could get
to by car and your non bicycle owning friends couldn't come and visit you.
