Hi there everybody discussing " Packet Radio is Over ".
May I put my two pennorth in.

What seems to be forgotten is that where we are today is the fact that most
radio packets over any distance are carried on the back of the the interenet
vi AXIP protocol.
Now most of the AXIP stations through which we operate are located at
universities, these of course being operated by licenced hams who are usually
communication academics employed by the university and of course are tapped
into the unviversity net and then onto the internet,so we are virtually
getting an internet service for free; the university of course footing the bill.

In Australia the Australian Communications Authority issued an edict some
time ago to the effect that university computer networks used on the
internet could only be used by officers employed by the university.
This of course has closed down a number of links here.
Also another thing is costing and funding ,and in time more universities are
going discover that the ham links are using too much of their funding
allocation.

Now there may be a few monied hams around who can afford a permanent link to
the internet - usually in connection with a business - who can still provide
a few links.

No doubt packet could be established through the sats ,but its the same old
question; who's going to pay.

>From my own perspective I will still carry on with packet radio as I use it
more for educational and learning exercise than I do for communication.

Thats my thoughts for what its worth
