John,

I got satupdat for Linux from ftp.lip6.fr, or ftp.f6fbb.org, cannot
remember well now. I know of no way to shut the server down.

I am afraid it might not like to have empty directories, and it might
be as simple as filling it with at least one record. I transfered my
satellite files from FBB 5.15c and have never had any problems with
it. I mean the 16609.sat, 19204.sat files and such. I believe it also
would like to have a valid satel.dat, at least one that is the
correct format no matter if it is updated or outdated.

Actually, I did no updates for about a month, and the only problem is
that data might be worthless or misleading, but no ill consequences
to my BBS. Yesterday I straightened out the xfbb.sh and it is doing
the updates at maintenance time.

Are you running FBB as a full BBS or a PMS ? If it is a full BBS I
see no point in not running the satellite server, it gives absolutely
no trouble after being well configured. I did it for FOUR years with
FBB 5.15c, I just kept on updating satupdat.exe. You might be
receiving the keplerian bulletins, so it would be sensible to make
use of them and give the service to your neighborhood.

If you are running just a PMS, then I understand it takes some
valuable HD space and you are not striving in give such a service, so
why bother ?

Nevertheless, I would encourage you to run the server. It takes less
than a megabyte, which is about a dime worth in the latest HD's
"real estate"....8-)
