Hi all,
We are currently running 2 Linux sites, with a third due to be added.
However this is currently being delayed due to problems with TCP/IP
seemingly "stopping" in mid flow when transferring data.

The systems are all identical hardware (Compaq Deskpro XL 5/100, 48Mb RAM,
1Gb SCSI, Matrox Millenium, USCC-4 TNCs) as we were donated the 4 PCs, and
bought the USCCs to allow 3 on-line systems and a fourth identical in case
of failure.

The software packages used are:
Kernel 2.0.35 (full, not patched 2.0.34)
     Slackware Linux 3.5
       - PPP daemon 2.2.0f and 2.3.5
       - Dynamic linker (ld.so) 1.9.9
       - C compiler egcs-1.0.3
       - Binutils 2.8.1.0.23
       - Linux C Library libc.so.5.4.44
       - Linux C++ Library      libstdc++.so.2.8.0
       - Termcap libtermcap.so.2.0.8
       - Procps 1.2.7
       - Gpm 1.13
       - SysVinit 2.73
       - Shadow Password Suite shadow-980529
       - Util-linux 2.7.1
       - X Window System XFree86 3.3.2-patch2
     mgetty+sendfax 0.99
     z8530drv v3.0
     z8530 Utils v 3.0.1
     FBB daemon v7.00g21
     BIND v8.1.2
     Sendmail v8.9.1
     INN v2.1
     ax25utils v2.1.42a
mailgw 0.3.0 (self modified for "distribution" fields to allow
                   compatibility with UKNOS)

The first machine is an FBB AX25 BBS, with Netrom for general user access.

The second machine (mine!) runs FBB, Netrom, Inn, Sendmail, BIND and Mailgw
gateway services to allow mail transfer between ax25 and IP (No user
access).

The third machine, currently a 486 Windows 95 Machine with UKNOS (a JNOS
derivative), is going to be replaced with a machine running INN, Sendmail
and other related services, talking to user's machines which are generally
using JNOS / UKNOS.

IP is sent in Datagram Mode, and the three of us are on a private
frequency. (I am in the middle).

Right, now that I have rabbitted on about the configurations, this is the
problem we are having:

This problem affects from my machine to both the remote Linux and remote
UKNOS machines, and happens whether it session is initiated by either the
remote or local end. It also happens on a variety of services, operated by
seperate programs, both through Inetd (eg FTP) or direct to applications
(eg Sendmail)

The problem is that when a session is started (for this bit I will assume
NNTP), The SYN is sent, acknoledged and data transfer starts to operate as
normal. However after approximately 1 Minute of data transfer, with frames
being acked in the correct sequence, my end seems to just stop sending IP
frames. The IP protocol is still running as I can manually issue Pings to
the same host, but the connection just hangs, his end saying that I am
connected, and that it is waiting for data. He also sees exactly the frames
I have sent, with none missing on his monitor screen. He has also run up
another machine using the Flexnet AX25 driver for windows 95 with a Baycom
and Micros**t Internet News, with the same results, although this can talk
to his UKNOS machine without problems.

I scoured this newslist archive, and saw a patch from G4KLX to the core IP
modules for altering the backoff timer, and have tried this too... still no
luck.

Can anybody help me? I am hoping it may just be a few major settings
tweaks to /proc/sys , but I have tried what I believed to be correct
parameters and it is still happenning!! IT IS DRIVING ME NUTS!!!

If files etc are wanted, please let me know and I will oblige.. I am at
work, but there is Dialup capability to my box.

Please reply to: [EMAIL PROTECTED], as this is my Work eMail address, and I was
hoping to get this problem fixed and the new box deployed over the Xmas
period!

(I won't add a tag - work add a naff one for me!)
