This is quite feasible, many on this mailing list are doing it. You can
either compile the AX.25 capabilities into the kernel or use JNOS or TNOS.
I'd recommend you take a look at the AX25-HOWTO for some details. This
document is not quite up-to-date, but the main thing missing is that you
don't need to patch the source with the latest kernels.

It depends a bit on what software the BBS is running, but if you both have
default routing for 44.8.0/24 via the radio ports you should have basic
connectivity.
