ethernet problems with ax256 utils

Since installing the ax25 utils I have been unable to use my ethernet card
even though it comes up ok with "ifconfig". If I disable the startup of ax25
utils then the ethernet
will start working again.
Do I have to configure the ethernet card in ax25 ?
