Why not David?
  
For the newbies like myself, is a great deal better to use the menuconfig 
it permits you in graphical mode to configure everything a great deal
quicker
if someone yet not has installed the X-Windows.

And the advantage that has the menuconfig is that without running the
X-Windows 
you obtain the menu in graphic mode and overall, that if you have a doubt 
upon a parameter with only asking it aid (H)ELP about that parameter
and it obtains a description of the parameters

what does function has and what does advantage or disadvantage 
you obtain with this parameter.
  
It is my personal opinion about the use of the menuconfig,
I belive that is recommended that the newbie persons like me use this way.
