I was just offering an alternative in case downloading and installing
ncurses proved to be a bit of a hassle. "make config" really isn't
all that difficult to figure out. I just saw two messages saying
"install ncurses" and thought I'd offer up an alternative.

The two modes of configuration aren't all *that* different. One is
just linear/serial (which doesn't mean you can't hold down the Enter
key to get where you need to be) while the other is a bit friendlier.
If the only reason he needs ncurses is to use menuconfig, it might be
more efficient to simply use "make config" and figure it out.
Of course, I also believe installing ncurses to be the best course of
action, especially for newbies. Like I said, I was just offering an
alternative.
