The answer is simple: Use net-tools-1.51 and ax25-utils-2.1.42a,
preferably as binary packages so you don't have to compile them
yourself. Note that the current ax25-utils were designed to work
with kernel 2.2.42 so they may be not fully operational in 2.2.6. A
new release especially for 2.2.x kernels is being prepared at the
moment, so you have to be patient until it is released.

The original AX.25-HOWTO is a little bit outdated at that point. We
