It's at least worth a try.

Hmm, the soft-dcd discussion... I think it was my fault, had some problems
with mail mysteriously disappearing on my system after upgrading to nmh
(the new MH system does not lock folders when adding mail with rcvstore
and before I noticed and fixed my .procmailrc several mails got down the 
drain.)

That can have various reasons. I know the BayCom L2 driver works more 
reliable because it re-initializes an SCC channel on every tx/rx switch,
as long as NETCHL doesn't access the HD or FD not much else happens on
the system, hence (almost) no lost interrupts, etc.
