Did you try 'make config' ? Is the terminfo database well installed ?
It is a typical problem, that can be overcome with the old, text mode
interface.

If all is well installed, it is nicer. There are even who prefer to
do xconfig, from an X11 terminal, but it has additional problems,
like having a properly configured X11, which might not be trivial.
