It sounds almost as if there's a routing problem. I know pppd is
usually configured to set up a default route pointing to your PPP link.
If you don't have any static routes for your local ethernet, this could
cause problems. I'd be interested in seeing the contents of your routing
table before and after this problem occurs.
Though I have no idea why this would have anything to do with your
soundmodem stuff... It's just an idea.
