You've probably already done this, but I have to ask anyway.
After you've compiled your kernel, have you installed it and
rebooted? Typically this involves copying it from
arch/i386/boot/zImage to your /boot directory, editing
/etc/lilo.conf, running lilo, and then rebooting.
