I've got two PCs running Linux, with nearly the same configuration.
On the 1st one, no problem, the Baycom 1k2 modem works fine.
On the 2nd machine, I've got a strange behavior :
- the power led of the modem lights when I 'ifconfig' it
- no incoming frames are decoded with 'listen'
- when trying to 'call' someone, the outgoing frames appear
in 'listen', but PTT is not keyed, and nothing comes out of
the serial port (serial port tester with red/green leds)
- when 'pinging' someone, same thing : ARP frames appear in the
'listen' window, but no output to the modem & no PTT
- 'sethdlc -c' (calibration) doesn't change anything
- 'ifconfig' shows always 0 for rx and tx frames
- 'sethdlc -d' reports only zeroes
-> There seem to be absolutely _NO_ communication at all
between the driver and the Baycom modem...
Of course, the hardware, irq, i/o adress, etc have been checked
and re-checked, all should be OK :
- the Baycom modem works fine on another PC and under DOS
- the Linux serial port works fine with a phone modem and
with a yam 9k6 modem
- the startup file is very classic (setserial uart none,
sethdlc -p, sethdlc -a, ifconfig up). Furthermore, it is
exactly the same on my two machines, and it works on the
2nd one !
- the UARTs are reported to be 16550A on both machines
(but the motherboards are not the same, the 'good one' is
an Asus TX97, and the 'bad one' is some kind of clone)
- the kernel was previously 2.0.36 (RedHat 5.0). I erased
all and installed a 2.2.12 kernel (SuSE 6.2) on a new HD,
with EXACTLY the same problem.
Browsing this mailing-list's archives, I saw some references
to _exactly_ the same problem lots of months ago, but I didn't find
any solution (other than changing UARTs). It seems that some UARTS
are not well detected or well compatible with standard 16550A.
Anyway, I'M SURE THERE'S A WORKAROUND, because during the 2.2.12
installation, ax25-tools/apps compiling, etc, I made some tests
'by hand' and I MANAGED TO HAVE IT WORK and to connect to my
local node ! But after finishing installation, I never managed
to do it again !!!
Any information is welcome ! Of course, I can put my config files
here if needed, but I don't think they're wrong, because they are OK
on my other PC...
