Hello there everybody,

Since I am new to this mailing list, I hope I won't ask a question that has
been asked a million times over.

It's about the serial BayCom 1200. After having read all the documentation I
could find via the InterNet (especially the AX25-HOWTO and the linkt online
documentation on AX25 and the BayCom device) I am still puzzled by its
installation.

My system is based on the SuSE 6.2 distribution, using kernel version 2.2.13. I
compiled all the Kernel modules required (or did I miss any?):

# Amateur Radio support
#
CONFIG_HAMRADIO=y
CONFIG_AX25=m
CONFIG_AX25_DAMA_SLAVE=y
CONFIG_NETROM=m
# CONFIG_ROSE is not set
# CONFIG_MKISS is not set
# CONFIG_6PACK is not set
# CONFIG_BPQETHER is not set
# CONFIG_DMASCC is not set
# CONFIG_SCC is not set
CONFIG_BAYCOM_SER_FDX=m
# CONFIG_BAYCOM_SER_HDX is not set
# CONFIG_BAYCOM_PAR is not set
# CONFIG_BAYCOM_EPP is not set
# CONFIG_SOUNDMODEM is not set
# CONFIG_YAM is not set
# CONFIG_HFMODEM is not set

The following rpm files from the distribution CDs are installed but not
configured:

[i] ax25apps  Anwendungen fr Kernel AX.25
[i] ax25spyd Dmon der AX.25 Pakete vom Kernel mitloggt
[i] ax25tool  AX.25 Tools fr PacketRadio Verbindungen
[i] libax25   AX.25 Bibliotheken
[i] linkt LinuX KDE Terminal fr Packet Radio

Robert Steinhuer's linkt documentation refers to an ax25-utils.rpm file that
is supposed to be distributed along with SuSE. I got this rpm file from
ftp.suse.com last night, but it seems to me that it overlaps with ax25apps and
ax25tool, even though it includes files in /etc/ax25 which the other two lack
(while I am testing this the /etc/ax25 directory only has one entry:
ax25spyd.conf). Frankly, I don't know whether installing ax25-utils over the
others might be such a good idea, so I haven't done that.

Anyway, I went on by installing the modules like this:

betazed:~ # setserial /dev/ttyS1 uart none
betazed:~ # insmod ax25
Using /lib/modules/2.2.13/misc/ax25.o
betazed:~ # insmod hdlcdrv
Using /lib/modules/2.2.13/net/hdlcdrv.o
betazed:~ # insmod baycom_ser_fdx mode="12*" iobase=0x2f8 irq=3
Using /lib/modules/2.2.13/net/baycom_ser_fdx.o

betazed:~ # lsmod
Module                  Size  Used by
baycom_ser_fdx          5300   0  (unused)
hdlcdrv                 7032   4  [baycom_ser_fdx]
ax25                   35104   0  [hdlcdrv]
...

The aliases in conf.modules are set to

alias bc0              baycom
alias bc1              baycom
alias nr0              netrom
alias pi0a             pi2
alias pt0a             pt
alias bcsf0            baycom_ser_fdx
alias bcsh0            baycom_ser_hdx
alias bcp0             baycom_par
alias bce0             baycom_epp

No error messages whatsoever. Still the device /dev/bc0 (51,0) remains
dead. I also read about the new devices bcsf0 etc., but those do not exist on
my system. I'd like to create them using mknod, however I do not know which
major number to use.

The bottom line is: I would like to ask you to help me. :-)

- Is my kernel setup okay?
- What SuSE packages do I really need to use packet radio?
- What files are required in the /etc/ax25 directory?
- What devices have to be created and how do I do that?
- Would somebody using a similar SuSE setup with a BayCom modem
  connected to the system please be so kind to send me their
  rc-scripts as well as the other configuration files? (please send
  them to [EMAIL PROTECTED])

I am really looking forward to receiving your replies! Thanks for your help in
advance!

73,
Martin
