There was some discussion on encryption 6-12 months ago on the list.  
Depending on your location in the world, you may be able to use 
encryption for authentication only - not to obscure the data, but just 
for authenticating the user.  I would be really careful with this in 
the ham bands anyway.

I don't recall any mention of speed in the original post.  There are 
off the shelf solutions for packed at 9k6 and 19k2 shouldn't be much 
harder. Instructions for 56K links are pretty easy to find too.  
Depends on how much time/money there is to invest.

FWIW, 1200 baud is reasonable for many connections.  It's not bad for 
interactive sessions (telnet), but 9k6 would of course be much more 
pleasant to use.  For non-interactive sessions, who cares how fast the 
data is transferred, as long as the network is not saturated and the 
data does get through (the emergency situations with a need for real 
time communications are not included in this argument).
