We have FPAC switches out in the swamp here in FL, and at many
other sites, these switches use KISS TNC's because they were originally
ROSE switch sites, we installed FPAC put in KISS eproms and off they
go. The cost of the site was just adding the computer, going to some
other solution would have probably driven the site off of the air, and
we need to keep those sites up. They do not have that much problems
with the KISS TNC, and the cost of going to something else would probably
have made the whole site too costly to change at all.

By way the computers were donated or otherwise scrounged so the cost
there was minimal or none B-}

I am sure there are many other places in a similar condition, hams (in the
USA at least) are notoriously 'cheap' and usually the whole mess is born
by only a small number of people, even though there are boat loads of
users. The usual issue is that it is a feebee, you try and get them to anty
up $$ to help pay and they scream and claw at you, so you make do with
what you have... B-b
