I've used minicom with a TNC-2 without any problems. You might have a
mismatch between the serial port parameters in minicom and the settings
of the TNC.
The default serial communication mode for a TNC-2 is 7E1 (I don't have
a clue why that was chosen, but we're talking about 1984 technology
here), while minicom's default is (IIRC) 8N1. You can change the
setting in minicom, or to switch the TNC to 8N1, type:
awlen8
par 0
restart
Also, the maximum baud rate for an unmodified TNC-2 is 9600 baud. Dip
switches 1-4 should be set to OFF and switch 5 to ON for this baud
rate. Set minicom to use the same rate, of course.
Other than that, I can't see any reason why minicom shouldn't work for you.
