If you're using a RedHat-based system, you might want to use the
RPM instead of worrying about compiling it all yourself.  I'm using
ax25-utils-2.1.42a-3 without problem on a 2.2.16 kernel.  You can find
the relevant RPM's (and dependencies, if needed) from rpmfind.net.
