Subject: Which CPU to upgrade to?

I have a Intel Pentium 90 on a Intel Neptune mb that I bought 3 or 4 years
ago. I want to upgrade the CPU w/o swapping out the motherboard. Which CPU
should I upgrade to? I am interested in hearing about Intel, AMD, and Cyrix
(or any others) upgrades. Also, I will be exclusively running Linux 2.0.36
and Linux 2.2 (when it comes out).

Which is the most bang for the buck? Are there any to stay away from? etc,
etc.

Thanks,
John

Could someone be kind enough to lend me a hande?

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hello,

I am trying to install RedHat 5.1 on one of my machines with a DPT
2144UW
RAID controller. I've set up three Barracuda drives in a RAID-0
configuration
and everything goes well in the installation until I reach the screen
where
I have to choose to run DiskDruid or fdisk to create partitions. At
this point,
( not sooner because boot messages are not shown on the screen,) one
is horrified
to discover that the disks have not been recognized as a single array
disk but
disks do show up individually. Please note that I've been using DPT
array controllers
for the last five years, albeit with other OS's, and know how to
create arrays. The problem
is that the boot floppy supplied by RedHat does not account for the
eventuality
that one might try to install on a RAID system. I use DPT controllers
on my other
(no longer available) Linux machines but never used RAID under
Linux. I've seen
the 'Linux DPT Hardware RAID HOWTO ' but that does not help me with a
fresh install.
 What are your suggestions ?

Regards,
Marcelo

My understanding is that TWAIN is a driver-application interface, not
a hardware-driver interface. You need detailed hardware specs for the
scanner. Good luck finding any.

Umax sells a cheap SCSI scanner, though they will not support you in
any way manner or form. Just mentioning Linux trashes any hope of
getting any help.

What version of PPP are you using? I use bellatlantic and it wouldn't
connect with any new version of PPP above version 2.2.0f-5 that came
with RedHat 5.0 Powertools. As soon as I downgraded everything worked
perfectly.

I have been using bellatlantic and Redhat for a year and could never use
any version of PPP above 2.2.0f-5 and of course we all know that
BellAtlantic doesn't support linux so I couldn't get any help from them.

I also use wvdial to connect.

I've been using a Protec Bytelan KVM switch for about a
year with four computers connected, 1 Linux, 1 nt4 and
2 win95/98. The only problem I had was with a win95
screensaver that occasionally locked up the mouse on
all computers. Not using that particular screensaver
eliminated the problem. Protec now has a less expensive
unit for just 2 computers connected to the same mouse,
keyboard and video for about $110. The Protec cables
are a little expensive, but they are good and have a
minimal amount of interference (29.00 each, but worth it).
The Protec customer support is very good, if you need it.

Switching to any computer at any time has never been
a problem. Very stable.

By the way, the only computer that was able to un-freeze
it's mouse was the Linux box. The rest had to be rebooted.
The mouse lockup is no longer a problem, though.
Other computers continuously get swapped in and out
without any problems.

There are units other that the Protec available, but the
are significantly more expensive.

First of all, are; you sure your getting an mlppp connection? ie: are both B
channel LED's lit up when you get connected? Assuming they are, you should
definately get better throughput thenj 2-3K/second. What is the DTE rate for
/dev/modem set to? I believe the correct command you should issue to setserial
(prior to ppp-on, or ifup command) is:
#setserial -a -v /dev/modem 115200 irq 3 port 0x2f8
assuming /dev/modem points to COM2.

The other parameters in setserial (spd_cust, spd_vhi, divisior, baud_base)
shouldnt matter and you should take the default if you use the built in COM
ports on the motherboard. I assume you have a 16550 UART, so the defaults
should be ok.

Be that as it may, the dte rate (baud rate) for setserial will be overridden
by the baud rate in ppp options, so it's possible that although you think that
you're setting the highest baud rate via setserial, it's autobauding down to a
lower baud rate because of a setting in /etc/ppp/options.

Finally, you really shouldnt expect a 16550 to go any faster then 115200
because of it's smaller i/o buffer size. It *can* be made to work at 230400,
but it's tricky and I don't recdomend it.

Does it *ever* freeze when you are not running X?
I bet the kernel and so on are still alive, it's just that the X
server has crashed and can't let go of the screen & keyboard.

My brother has two Jaz drives (as well as a Zip, a Bernoulli, and I
don't know what-all), and very little space on his hard drives. He's
expressed a bit of a passing interest in Linux, and I'd offered to
install a partition on a Jaz disk for him. However, one of his
friends claims that Jaz disks are really unsuited for holding
often-accessed information--they're too slow to read and write, and
are really meant solely for making backups--something like a bootable
OS and swap space would overtax the media and wear it out quickly.

However, one of _my_ friends, whose computer expertise I tend to
trust, claims that Jaz disks are as sturdy and as fast as your average
SCSI hard drive, and that he keeps his MP3 collection on them.

Who's right? Would a bootable Linux partition do well on a Jaz drive?
Please give me the straight Jaz on this issue, if you would. :)

Subject: Help! Immovable Clusters Restrict Space Available for New Partition!
Date: Sat, 9 Jan 1999 16:14:21 +1100

I hope someone will know how to help with this problem.

I have a three gigabyte hard drive, with 2 gigabytes free space. Windows
95b is the OS, and I used its Disk Defragmenter tool to defragment the whole
disk. In order to resize a partition, all the files have to be on one side
of the disk, and all the free space on the other.

I wish to set aside 1 gigabyte of space for Linux partition/s, using a
non-destructive partioning tool. However, when I tried to use FIPS (the
partitioning tool supplied with Red Hat 5.2), the largest partition it could
create was 126 Mb - there was a cluster at 126mb from the end of the
partition, restricting the space available for the new partition.
Defragmenting doesn't move this cluster or the many others that are
scattered through the free space - it marks them as immovable clusters.

Can anyone please tell me what this means, and how to get rid of them? I
don't think I'm running any mirror or imaging programs, like the
documentation for FIPS suggested. I've tried disabling virtual memory in
Windows, thinking that the swap file might show up as immovable clusters.
The main problem, I think, is the irritating little clusters / cluster
groups, which show up even when I've rebooted into clean vanilla DOS.

I would be very grateful if someone could tell me how to move or delete
these clusters, either by finding the file attached to them, or by using a
disk tool or similar utility. Are these used by Windows 95? Will Partition
Magic, if I buy a copy, ignore them or delete them and allow me to create a
new partition that way? Could system attributes set on Win95 files cause
clusters to appear immovable (eg hidden, system, read-only) ?

Thanks for your attention to this plea!

Sorry I disagree with that.... as I have personally built a linux box with 8

yes 8 NICs... and the drivers are loaded as modules

and it works perfectly

the cards are RealTek NE2000 clones
