Does a PDCD driver exist. My drive is a COMPAQ, but Panasonic and
others exist. Its the one that reads a CDROM, and reads and writes a
PD650 optical data cartridge (650 MB). It's a SCSI device. Under
Windoze it shows up as two devices: Removable Drive D and CDROM E, but
it's still one physical device, which is how it's being recognized
under Linux. The boot log part gives the message
Detected scsi CD-ROM sr0 at scsi0, channel 0, id 5, lun 0
mount /dev/scd0 /mnt/pdcd
will mount a CD-ROM without a problem. If I place a PDCD cartridge in
the drive, the same command will not work. I've tried to specify the
file type as vfat, but it does not work. I'm running RedHat 5.2

Try using:
mount /dev/cdrom
then:
cd /dev/cdrom
(sometimes the liked file is /mnt/hdd)
keep in mind how devices are named.
the first floppy drive in linux is fd0
the second is fd1
hard drives are designated hda, hdb, hdc, etc....
'ls -la |more' is like the dir command in dos.
oh, and be sure to unmount the disk when through:
umount /dev/cdrom

on ext2fs-systems, each time a mount occurs, a mount-counter is
incremented and a fsck is done as it reaches a certain level.
you can change this with tune2fs -c 999 /dev/hda1, just read man
tune2fs.

if you're going RAID5, i'd suggest you get 5 or 6 HDD for your data, instead
of 4 (six if you're paranoid and want a free hot-spare HDD, in case one of
the 5 goes out; although your data will run fine off of the 3 HDD and the
4th for hot-spare, i'd rather have 5 HDDs for RAID5 and have a spare).
also, i'm not sure whether the supermicro mobo has built-in SCSI controller
or not...but if it doesn't i'd suggest you get a SCSI controller for your
primary HDD for your OS and your tape backup and have only your RAID5 data
HDDs on the RAID controller. that way, if your RAID controller decides it
doesn't work anymore, your OS HDD won't be affected since it's on a separate
SCSI controller. reading your specs, i'm assuming you want a some-what
redundant server...so, you may want to seriously consider the mentioned
suggestions...plus, it's not that much more expensive (about $400-500
more)...other than that, looks good...i wouldn't mind having one of
those...hehe...

Hi,
I recently up'd my mother board to a PCChips 590 with onboard sound and
agp video. I have run into two small snags that I am posting.
1. audio from cd will not play through sound board. Sound works fine otherwise.
the cd hardware does all the functions like eject, skipto etc. but now
sound. I use dualboot with OS2Warp and the cd plays fine there.
2. video seems to be held to vga color level. I assume that to be the drivers.
any advise would be most appreciated.
Thanks,

I get the following for my Soundblaster PCI 64:
Bus 0, device 12, function 0:
Multimedia audio controller: Unknown vendor Unknown device (rev 2).
Vendor id=1274. Device id=1371.
Slow devsel. IRQ 12. Master Capable. Latency=32. Min
Gnt=12.Max Lat=128.
I/O at 0xe000.
It seems as we have the same Vendor id and Device id. The Soundblaster
PCI 64 has also been sold as Ensonic AudioPCI. I use the ALSA drivers
which is avaiable at http://alsa.jcu.cz

I haven't used DLT with Linux, but if you are going to do a lot of
backups of big amounts of data you should go for a DLT 7000. The DLT
7000 is the most expensive tape drive, but stores 35 GB+compression on
each tape compared to 20 GB+compression for the DLT 4000. As the DLT
7000 and the DLT 4000 use the same kind of tapes this means storing data
to almost half the price.

This kind of compile and linking errors when compiling the kernel are
not because of your hardware. Did you do something like:
"make xconfig ; make dep; make clean ; make zImage"?
I would guess that the above errors could come from not doing
"make dep" or "make clean".

Hi,
I had a Ditto Max (parallel port) drive working. It worked with ftape
4.02 and a 2.0.36 kernel. There are notes on the ftape page on that
version being unstable with parallel drives. There is a fix in 4.03.
I haven't had any luck getting newer ftape versions to work with 2.2.x
kernels.

I understand why ext2fs does this, but the default behaviour is very
obnoxious on laptops. I boot my laptop very often (once a day?), and
when I boot it I'm often on battery - the last thing I want is to
chew power checking the disk.
I can use tune2fs to change the behavior, sure. It'd be neat if ext2fs
could use some smarter heuristic on when to check, though. I would
think counting the number of disk writes would be more useful than
mounts, but maybe that's not simple to do.

Absolutely untrue. They are fully supported in Linux, the driver is part
