Hi,
I had the same problems with a K62-350 and DFI-Motherboard.
The Problem was a wrong jumper-Setting on the motherboard.
So go to the AMD-Homepage to the motherboard section and find
out your correct Jumper-Settings for your processor and motherboard.
After that all should work fine.

I would agree go for the a) option, ISA modem, PCI network.

I do not know why you need a PCI modem for?? unless you have no ISA ports
or have no serial ports for an external modem.

Hello,

For the two colors icons on Netscape, i have resolved the same problem. He comes
when the depth color are in 24 bits mode.
Try to turn your depth color to 16 or 32 bits.

Sorry for my very bad english!!!

I am looking for information on how drivers work under linux (particular.

(how to write an interrupt handler, when it is called, how are the processes
scheduled, ...)

Any book or web resource would be greatly appreciated... Please note that

There are only a few 56KBPS chip sets (virtually all 56k modems use one of
these few) - I suspect that the ones on your modem are either in the Lucent
164x family or the rockwell winmodem family. The web site
<www.modemblaster.com> gives nothing about the technology actually
used on the card nor how to use the cards with Linux (this is of course,
   a big surprise to me).

Once you identify the chip set used for your modem, you can search the
internet to see if anyone has a driver for that chip set. I suspect that
   there isn't one.

If your modem has a lucent chip set and you are handy with reverse
engineering and know something about the internals of win nt, you might
be able to use the Lucent win NT driver and the ISAPNP driver from
Win NT to design a PNP Linux driver for your modem. I reccomend these
Win NT drivers because win NT is not very PNP capable out of the box - you
need to install the isapnp driver and a win NT (not win 9x) driver. For a
long time lucent only had win 9x drivers. Recently they added Win NT
drivers, but they hid them in the win 9x install package! If I hadn't know
both the win 9x and the win NT driver architecture, I would never have found
them. Many modem makers strip out the win NT drivers from the lucent
driver SDK and only ship the win 9x drivers.

Good luck with your modem. I suspect you will find it will work well
with win 9x, may not work with win NT and probably will never work
  with Linux.

  Jim G.

P.S. I haven't seen your card, but I would expect that it contains a PCI
interface chip, a modem DSP chip and few tele interface components.
The driver has to talk to the DSP chip through PCI chip - it
generally uses a proprietary protocol. The driver impliments the
hayes protocol interface that comm program expect. The driver
may also do some of the compression and error controll.

My humble opinion is that *if* someone like the producers of Quake etc.
is open to producing their product for Linux, and it outperforms the
same game on a Win** platform, then some strategic marketing will do a
wonder for the linux community.

Although I have not really purchased Linux software (I have purchased
SuSE 5.3, but not any other "applications") I believe that the gaming
community who love living at the bleeding edge of technology will adopt
Linux as a real games platform. This will provide an image of Linux as
"The best games platform" and the OS will get a lot of exposure. Perhaps
not a good way of doing it!

The point though, is that commercially avilable applications are better
than no applications. If there is a commercial application, it will not
be long until the free one follows anyway.

Just my $0.01.

I had the same problem with a 2940UW I bought about 6-7 weeks ago. What
ever the current 2.1 series kernel was at that time wouldn't boot with the
scsi card in, got into an endless timeout-reset loop. I wrung my hands
for about 2 weeks then upped the kernel to 2.1.34 and have had nothing but
joy since. I'm not really sure about what kernel versions did and didn't
work with the 2940UW, but the point is a move up to the latest (2.2pre5 as
of now) may be all you need.

This is obviously an error, but I'm not sure what to do to fix it.
Any clues? Thanks.

SuSE (www.suse.com) has developed a video driver for the Cyrix MediaGX CPU (it
also supports the SiS 5598 and 6296(?) chipsets with built-in video). It is
available at their web site and is included in their distribution from version
5.3 onward. I believe they've also contributed this Xserver to the Xfree86
group (www.xfree86.org) and you can also get it there. You also might be
interested to know that Alan Cox of Linux kernel-development fame has, among
others, a Cyrix MediaGX-based PC on his desk (www.uk.linux.org).

Thank you for the responses...looks like option a) wins, and never should have
been in doubt, to say the least :), doh?! Great question "Why do you need PCI
modems?" Sounds like, from these responses, they are a waste of a PCI slot.

Subject: Software RAID5 questions

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I used mdutils version 0.41-4 (SuSE 5.3, kernel 2.0.35) on a software
RAID5 consisting of 3 SCSI disks (/dev/sd[abc]6) so far.
Are there any tools for recovering the RAID after a disk failure?

I simulated a failure by unplugging power supply of the 2nd disk (sdb6)
and booted the system.
Two disks were reported to be present: First disk sda (OK), and third
disk as sdb (WRONG, should be sdc). (Is there a way how to change
this??)
Is there a way to recover the RAID content as it was before this crash
now? How to do so?
Do I have to change my config file before running ckraid?
Which actions do I have to take after ckraid?

Is there a newer mdtools version available? (Perhaps part of the SuSE
6.0 distribution?)

Reading the Software-RAID Howto (v0.51) I wonder what the exact
difference between disk and power failure is. Is disk power cut off (as
described above) not a disk failure?

Thanx for your help

The ZIP250 works fine in Linux. Just load the IMM driver, same as the
Zip Plus.

I am in the process of updating the HOWTO now.

The Ensoniq Sounscape is an ISA card, and is *much* different from the
Ensoniq Audio PCI. The soundscape driver will not work with that
card.
