Can anyone suggest a pci video card (or chip set) which works with dosemu
full screen graphical modes? I have tried et4000 and s3 trio64 without much
success. Both cards work with X11 though. I have dosemu 0.66.7 from debian
2.0 distribution.

I have the same problem with a 2940U2W and AIC7895 chipset on a Dell optiplex
that has a 9.1 Western Digital drive. However, the linux I''m using is
DosLinux. The controller is scsiid=7 and the HD is scsiid=0. NT4.0 boots
ok, Linux 2.1.132, 2.0.36 doesn't boot all the way. Linux sees the controller
but doesn't see the disk drive and therefore hangs at this point. When I
get the Linux floopy disk boot disks, it boots ok and sees the hard disk
and everything else after that (the zip and network card). I can log in
and mount the SCSI Hard disk manually and list the different files on the
various partitions. I can also see the zip, cdrom too whether any of the
files are in fat, vfat etc. But when i boot directly off the hard drive
using loadlin, linux hangs after recognizing the controller, the auto
termination and scsiids and just before it's supposed to determine the
Hard drive etc.
Prsently I'm stuck. I have no problems with DOSlinux v2.0.36 or v2.1.132
booting on a PC that has IDE hard drives with 1 Gig.

Subject: HDD works, but fails to autodetect
Date: Mon, 25 Jan 1999 09:21:31 -0600
Greetings,
Here's one for you. I've just put together a
second computer out of all the spare parts I have
laying around. I am planning on dual booting
Linux with Win95, just like I do on my number 1
machine. I put together all the parts and
attempted to set up the BIOS. My hard drive, a
Western Digital Caviar 2850, 850 MB IDE drive, was
autodetected as primary slave. "Oops," I
thought. "I forgot to change the jumper on the
hard drive back to 'master'." Sure enough, I had
been using this as a second drive for a while, and
it was set to 'slave.' so I switched the jumper
and rebooted. It failed to autodetect!
To make a long story short, my hard drive is
found as a slave, but not found as a master. If I
manually set the parameters, and boot from a
floppy, I can install Linux on it, and set
partitions etc. and it all works fine, but on
boot, the hard drive is never found. It cannot
boot without the floppy. I've tried putting it on
both ribbon locations, swapped ribbons, and
checked the jumper. I've tried many BIOS options,
but none work.
Now, I'm not new to Linux, so don't assume
that I haven't tried the usual things, or that I
don't know where pin 1 is on the IDE ribbon. Just
tell me, what is it about a hard drive that makes
it autodetectable and bootable? Is this a boot
sector problem, or master boot record? When I
installed Linux, I put LILO on the first sector of
the linux partition, not the MBR. If I reinstall
and put it on the MBR will it fix the problem?
How can I tell lilo to put it on the MBR without
redoing the entire installation? I couldn't find
a command flag in the man page to set this. Any
ideas?
Please reply via email,
Thanks,
Matt Callaway

Hi,
We are using the 3c905 TX network card on our linux box
(slackware-2.0.36 kernel). We set the switching hub to 100M full duplex
(force). With using the 3c90xcfg.exe configuration disk, we set NIC card
as 100M full duplex (force) mode as well.
When we disconnect the linux box UTP cable, and re-plug again, the
connection will break out, and we have to reboot the machine. How can we
fix this problem.
Here is the information :

If it is a zoom there is a model number on the box. I am using a zoom externas,
dual mode. It is V 90 and 56 flex. It is an external and works fine with Linux
and windows. Most zooms internals have jumpers on them which should run in
linux. You can go to www.modems.com and find some info on Zoom modems.

I am trying to do a fresh install of RH5.2 on a P-133. when I use
autodetect at the scsi configuration step the card is not found. The
card's configured as follows:
IRQ=10
DMA=7
SCSI ID=7
BASE ADDRESS (bios address)=C8000h
IO=130-133h
Bios is enabled but via jumpers but I think because I have no internal
devices (hard drives) I get the message Bios Disabled --no 13h devices
(or something like that). Termination is enabled because I only have
external devices, a scsi zip and a scsi umax 600. I am limited in the
IRQ's and IO's. For some reason my sound card, an ensoniq
soundscapeVivo, will not let me change the IO from 330-33F to any other
setting. Additionally, I have no more IRQ's available in range
suggested by others on the news groups. 9 is used by the sound card, 11
the video card, and 12 the network card. Any suggestions? Should I
skip it and try to configure it after the install by recompiling and
passing instructions via lilo.conf? If so, what should these
instructions look like? (ie. if this is the route to take, could someone
send me a copy of their lilo.conf that does something like this?) Or is
my only alternative rippin out the sound card? All suggestions will be
greatly appreciated.
thanks

I'm thinking that most people who buy expensive USR modems don't
think twice about buying a better performing "real" modem to use
with Linux. The people that really "need" a Winmodem would like
one of the cheapest ones around. I don't know many candidates,
but I've seen them sell for less than 30 US$. Ones that use
the Lucent chip maybe?

Hmm. Other than avoiding ambiguity, I fail to see the sense in that.

Of course! I'm using 10x20 to read this.
I was referring to paper only (in my comparison above. So maybe not a
particularly good example). However, I still think that capitalised
beginnings of sentences would be helpful on screen too.

You got a fine eye then. I can hardly tell the difference. Ghee,
most of my colleagues don't even realise the difference when they are
printing the 300DPI-version of a pk-font on a 1200DPI printer (which
looks ghastly).

However, since it is quite readable here (black on white, I might

In German, capitalising nouns (and lots of words which aren't "nouns"
according to my Collins dictionary) might not so much be concerned
with increased speed while reading, but with aided understanding.
After all, German is quite famous for sentences which go on and on for
quite a while --- I would say it isn't rare for a reader of Mann
(pretty much any of them, for that matter) to find sentences which go
on for half a page or even a page. Being able to distinguish between
nouns and others words without taking context into consideration sure
could be helpful. Hmm. I wonder what a translation of Mann into
English would look like...

It might have resulted in more complicated sentences though. Not that
this is necessarily a good thing...

That sounds like a German accent. You can find some HOWTOs for non-English
(German, French, etc.) users via
http://www.aa.net/~swear/pedia/international.html
and local Linux User Groups (LUGs) at
http://www.aa.net/~swear/pedia/user-groups.html
Yes, Linux use is difficult and documentation is poorly organized,
but keep in mind the advantages, two of which are: 1) You can
almost always get your problem solved without getting professional
support, given sufficient time and reading. 2) There is lots
of documentation available at all levels of detail, if you look
for it long enough.
Most drivers come with the Linux "kernel". You hope the kernel
has what you need. You can search web pages and the documentation
and source code that comes with the kernel to find out. You can
also start the prossess of building a kernel to see what it
offers. (Download kernel, untar it, read README.)
Other drivers you find out about on various web pages or newsgroups,
download a tar file, untar it, read the README for installation info.
Printing drivers are usually default or specially configured
so-called "devices" of the "gs" (Ghostscript) program.
Good luck, and don't get discouraged. After getting some experience,
you'll likely find yourself "hooked".
