I'm pretty sure I have the right kernel config. Yes I'm using
XF86Config-4. Tell me, what are the permisions on /dev/input/mice on your
box?

At least I know I'm on the right track.

This belongs firmly in alt.sys.pc-clone.compaq.servers, so follow-ups set.

You needed to do:
- Systemboard firmware
- RAID (SMART) card firmware
- Disk firmware
- System partition upgrade (Thinks - does Linux support the system
partition?)

IMO, the system erase should not have been necessary.

Diags won't pick up a firmware bug.

Eh? Are you not using a Compaq SMART Array card???
Where do you get an "onboard NCR SCSI card" from?

Hi,

I have an external modem with 'US Robotics Faxmodem' written on it and it
didn't work with kppp either. I have got it working from following the
instructions in the PPP-HowTo. It needed nothing that wasn't in there.

You can find it at www.linuxdoc.org or it's probably in your distribution
on the cdrom.

If you need any more help then let us know.

When you copy a file from DOS or from Linux, do you send a form feed
character at the end?
Without that the page won't print and eject. (If you are sending a
larger document than one page, you should see something print anyway.)

I am running an ATI Mach64 VT. It uses the Mach64 driver and I
think you need that same (in XF86Setup check the readme after
selecting your video card). I have /etc/X11/X linked to
/usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_Mach64. I think that the SVGA server will
work as well but I have never tried it myself.

Also, if you still are getting a black screen, try killing the X
server (ctrl-alt-bksp) and check the messages on the screen.
They might give you an idea of what is loading/failing.

Unfortunately, I do not. I have found someone else who had the same
problem.

We both have ABit BP6 motherboards with dual celerons. We also both have
128 MB of memeory - however I really don't think that has any effect on
this problem. My question is is your motherboard/CPU's the same or are
they different? If different, what are they? Also, are you overclocking
your CPU's? Mine are. Haven't tried it in non-overclocked mode yet.

Also, this only seems to happen when running 2.4.0. 2.2.x runs just fine
with no APIC errors.

So, is it a Win printer? I'm asking coz "type filename.txt > prn"
under pure DOS ought to work unless it's a Win printer that needs
certain Win stuff (probably some .DLLs need to be loaded) to function.
If it's a Win printer, I hear it can be "troublesome" to get it to
work under Linux...

No, I have no knowledge of Epson printers, so I wouldn't know the
difference between a Stylus 800 and some other model...

Try ATX1 or ATX2 or ATX3 or ATX4 (dunno which one)
in the modem init string (if you know what I mean)
in order to get the correct dialtone setting.

i am also having trouble with printing to my parallel port and now think
the sound card might be conflicting with the parallel port. here's some

i see 3 conflicting sources referring to IRQ 7
i'm a bit confused, but thought it might help as you ponder this too.
i expect that my sound problem and printing may be inter-related.

1. according to dmesg:

2. according to /proc/interrupts -- why don't these jive with dmesg?

  7: 22663 XT-PIC eth1

I'm running SMP on kernel 2.4.1-pre9. I just added a second processor and noticed
that the stepping was different -- one being a boxed CPU and the other being an OEM.
The stepping is 2 and 3, respectively. I've looked for various information as to
whether or not I'll run into problems since the stepping is not the same. So far, all
seems stable, even on this developmental kernel.

Any help is appreciated.

Subject: NIC: loadable module doesn't compile
Date: 28 Jan 2001 20:35:50 GMT

Have a new computer with two KTI KF-330 NICs, they come with a loadable
module that is compiled for the 2.2.9 kernel. I have installed RedHat 7
(2.2.16-22), the source for the module does not compile.

Apparently definitions have changed in linux/netdevice.h and
linux/interrupts.h. It appears that in netdevice.h

struct device is replaced with struct net_device
struct enet_statistics is replaced with struct net_device_stats

Making these replacements in the driver source leaves me with three
compilation errors.

1) There are two references to tbusy, which is not a member of struct
net_device.
The transmit function tries to set bit 0, and the interrupt function tries
to clear it. Apparently, the module wants to indicate whether it is
transmitting.

2) The interrupt function also tries to set a value of NET_BH. There is an
enum of WHATEVER_BH values in interrupts.h, but NET_BH is not among them.
This is apparently a priority ranking for handling interrupts.

If anyone knows these libraries well enough to suggest what actions and
values I might try to replace the bad params with, I'd be very grateful.
Otherwise, suggesting a cheap NIC that is known to work with RedHat 7
(their hardware FAQ wasn't too helpful, mostly recommends 3COM NICs, which
are a little spendy) would help me out just as much (except I wouldn't get
as big a thrill out of buying a new NIC as I would from fixing a driver...)

Thanks,
