I would suggest an upgrade to Ghostscript verion 5.10 or 5.50 just as
a matter of course. I doubt that the ljet4 driver has been changed in
any big way, but it never hurts to have the improved Postscript
support offered by the latest Ghostscript version.

This printer is indeed listed as being slow in the compatibiliy list*;
the comment says "seems to be limited by parallel port speeds/speed of
host computer".
Ghostscript will always render a page then dump it to the printer as a
bitmap; this is how Postscript programs are structured and this is how
all Postscript implementations work (those inside printers do not face
a bottleneck, however, between themselves at the printer mechanism).
Dvilj is not limited to dumping one page at a time in bitmap form;
although I don't know much about it, it would be reasonable for dvilj
to be defining fonts as downloadable PCL fonts and then printing each
page by just telling the printer to put each character in the proper
place. This would typically result in less data...

Now this I'm not aware of. I'm not quite clear on what you are
describing, though - what do you mean by displaced lines, and what
sort of graphics - vector graphics or embedded bitmapped pictures?

Geez. Just change the fonts. One could do this even in Win 3.1.
Mind you, the current xfree and applet functionality available
will handle this situation just fine. So one is "free" to change
resolutions easily in X.

This is too 'difficult' and the 3rd party applets aren't
'bundled in'.

I installed the Rawhide release this week, and finally the HOT-247 card
works again. It worked fine wtih the 2.0.36 kernel, but broke when I went
to 2.2.3. With the full Rawhide release, I had no problems with the
card. Sndconfig automatically configured it and played the samples.

If it does not mention Windows 3.1 (it certainly would not
condescend to DOS and Linux), then most likely it is a nonmodem.
Buy it and make sure it does not work; we'd then add it to the
list http://www.o2.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html as a winmodem ;-)

I am skeptical because this modem is too cheap...
Even on the internet, V.90 hardware modems start at about $40.
If you need one, check the list of dealers

My system is unable to recognize a Wandat 3200 tape drive (ver 3.0
firwar)e on power up.
The SCSI controller is an ASUS PCI-SC875 board based on the NCR875
chip.
Kernel is 2.0.36 with the NCR53c8xx driver (3.1c)
When the driver scans the SCSI chain it reports that 'request failed'
on the ID used by the tape. If a tape is in the unit when linux is
started then a timeout occurs when the ID is probed, the SCSI scripts
are downloaded again and the process repeats.
Any thoughts on a cure?

Hehe ... its been a while since this one last popped up. A quick
DejaNews search for "5465" in comp.os.linux* yields 200 hits. A
quick look in the XFree86-FAQ would have revealed:

Q.E4- I've got a Cirrus Logic GD546x based card and am experiencing
system lockups. What can I do?
Try adding
Option "xaa_no_color_exp"
to your XF86Config file (in the Device section).
That, plus Option "no_pixmap_cache" gets rid of the occasional
screen garbage.

This is kind of strange.
What serial port you use? With what interrupt? What's the output of
setserial -g /dev/ttyS* and cat /proc/interrupts?
What protocol does your mouse speak?
Also, you can try to investigate your mouse with XF86Setup.

May i ask some stupid questions?
If you have a fast enough CPU and flash A/D and D/A connected
to the phone line (some isolation circuit, i guess), why would you
need an ASIC? If you have to program an ASIC chip in software,
why don't you just program a Gate Array directly. I am lookup
for a cheaper solution that Win Modem. I don't feel like paying
for half a solution.

Well, failing my redhat install, I have managed to get debian on this
little Compaq Contura 430cx. WOrks nicely. Still a couple of problems.
I cannot boot off any rescue floppy. Right after it starts trying to
load root.bin it says "Load failed.." and just stops right there.
The only solution is to power cycle the portable (floppy=thinkpad does
not work). The only way I can boot this guy is to boot using install.bat
or loadlin directly from DOS. (Not a problem, I can add to the win95
F8 menu.)
2) I can't get it to see the roller ball mouse in X. I've set the device
to PS/2 style and the port to /dev/ttyS0. That won't work. If I plug in
an external mouse and set it to Microsoft, then that works fine (on ttyS0).
Anybody have experience with rollerball mice, compaq, and X? (I don't
imagine this would be too machine specific)

Hi,
I have a problem with LILO. I want to have it on /dev/sda6 and let it
boot /dev/sda2 (W98) and /dev/sda3 (NT4).
This doesn't work on my system with ASUS P2B-DS and two SCSI disks.
What happens is that when configuread as meant (/dev/sd6 active, LILO on
/dev/sda6), the system won't boot.
When I install LILO on /dev/sda things look better. Linux boots fine.
NT4 however, starts a boot sequence but the gives me the BSOD with some
message that it coudn't find the boot device. Ok, silly NT4.
I think I have RTFM. But I still don't know what's going on. If you
know, by all means, speak your mind!!
Right now I have NT4's boot manager successfully configured to boot the
three OSes but I feel -say- akward with this situation. I include a
summary of my configuration.
