I have an AMD K6-300 in an Asus P5A ATX motherboard, 64M PC100 SDRAM, ATI
Xpert98 PCI video card, Symbios 53c815 based Fast SCSI-2 card, Intel
EEPRo10/100 Ethernet card, Fujitsu 6.4M UDMA hard drive. Everything works
fine. I started using it with a Debian Linux distribution sporting the 2.0.35
Kernel. I've since compiled about 10 different versions of the 2.2 Kernel
series, from pr3 through pre7, and now 2.2.3. No faults, no crashes.

Does your system have adequate cooling ? I'm using an AOpen mid-tower case.
I added a 2nd fan in the front of the case. I'm using a Vantec heatsink/fan
with heat conductive compound between the CPU and the heatsink.

I know some older AMD K6 CPU's (or was it the K6-2?) had a bug in them that
resulted in Sig 11 errors when compiling stuff. I bought mine around November
and it has been very solid. I run Netscape, scan stuff on my Microtek SCSI
scanner, edit them in Gimp, print stuff to my DJ660, all without crashing.

Hi all.
I run RedHat 5.2 (kernel 2.0.36) on my Thinkpad 760XL with Turbo
Tokenring PC Card and PCMCIA modem.
My WM is KDE and all the things are running well. Now, trying to install
Wine to run Lotus Notes from Linux.

The only problem occur is DHCP but I think it most on kernel level,
token ring, and dhcp level.

That's my share to you.

I've now looked at the mentioned sites and see that they do not explicitly
address my problem, running Linux with more than 32MB. The sites say that

at all about the motherboard configuration is mentioned.

The following, from my first post to you, shows that the Linux OS does

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone has experienced setting up a
linux box with the following card:

ATI RAGE Pro 2X AGP w/ TV-OUT

and if so,

what are your experiences hooking up the TV out
to a TV to see if any of the drivers for the
video card show anything on the screen..

The reason why I am asking is that I am developing
a embedded linux box with this specific card built
in and would like to know if the drivers that linux
already has is enough to run the video board.

Your replies are greatly appreciated.

Hi

Can anyone offer any advice, I keep getting this error whilst trying to

An error occured mounting the CD. The error output of the mount command is:

mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hdd
or too many mounted file systems

My Cdrom works with DOS/Win98 and it works with Linux during most of the
installation. I have tried entering into YAST and
configuring Installation Medium to IDE ATAPI but I get the same error
message. I have noticed when my PC starts Linux it reconises the Maxtor IDE
hard drive as /dev/hda and the CDrom as /dev/hdb.

That's because soundblaster 64/128pci don't have a wavetable on board, they
provide you with software to do the wavetable thing.
But of course , this software is only for windows.
there is a software wavetable for linux though, TIMIDITY

check out  http://www.goice.co.jp/member/mo/timidity/

I got midi working with a SB 64pci, but it is only working with TKtimidity, a
TK based interface., I couldn't get timidity to work with Kmidi or any other
interface.
Also it works in Netscape, but I got a lot of reverb and hicups .

Go to http://www.xfree86.org and download the SVGA X11 server from the
FTP site. You don't need the entire update to XFree86 3.3.3.1, the SVGA
server by itself works fine.

I've got this same card running 8 virtual screens at 1280x1024x32bpp
under KDE. As time goes on, I'll be spending more and more time under
Linux and less and less under MS products (though I have to support the
MS products, so I have to keep them around).

Hi all,

I am running slackware 3.6 with a 2.0.33 kernel on a P200. I have a tekram
390F with a panasonic 7502 and a Micropolis HD on it. The panasonic isn't
very good when it comes to reading CDs. It gets errors often, but it burns
flawlessly. I have tried a buslogic 950 controller and many of the data
errors went away. The termination is all correct. The problem with the
setup is that when the CD has an error the sytem freezes. In DOS the same
setup produces a read error and things go on, but linux dosen't like
dealing with errors and locks up. My question is what is the most tolerant
SCSI controller under linux in ppl's experience. I think I am going to get
a plextor 32 for a reader as its speed and error handing can be controller
from linux, but I want to get a better controller.

THanks

If only MS used their own standard dialogs more often... :^)

The problem is that those people who could have done it, didn't. They
gave us Athena and Motif instead. This is widely viewed as a major
PITA.

PostScript has a number of big advantages (device-independent, easy to
scale and rotate and put n-up, embeddable within itself and other
documents, etc.) A pity that Adobe aren't keen on DPS being used...

Bzzzt! There is a font server for X that supports TrueType fonts.
Don't know if it is supplied with any distributions, but it ought to
be.

You're looking at the wrong part of Unix culture! Event-driven
programming has been here for a very long time indeed...

Looking back over what I've written, I suppose the problem with Unix
for a long time is not that there were good solutions available, but
that they were only ever available commercially, and then when that
commercial interest decided that it could temporarily increase their
cash-flow by restricting access to the tech, everyone just went
elsewhere. This has helped fuel the FSF for a long time, and we
should all be grateful indeed.

MS at least play silly buggers with their customers and competitors
*differently* to that...

I am considering buying the Adaptec 2906 SCSI card for a P-133, 64MB RAM,
2-2.5GB IDE hard drives. The system is a dual boot win98 and RedHat 5.2

Is this card supported under Linux? The only info I can find lists 29xx

Also, if anyone has experience running a CD recorder on older hardware like
this, either under win98 or under linux, I'd appreciate that feedback.

I have a Toshiba Satellite 230 CX. I am experiencing problems installing
Linux (Debian 2.0) from a CD.

At first I tried to boot the computer from the CD by changing the boot
sequence BIOS setting. However, that was the only BIOS setting I changed. It
appeared the computer tried to boot Linux but aborted immediately every
time.

Next I disabled CPU caching. This seemed to solve the problem. Everything
seemed OK at first, but then it turned out the machine was working extremely
slowly. (The installation process took HOURS.)

I have had a look at some recommendations for Linux installation on
different Toshiba laptops, but I have not found mine.

Any suggestions (especially concerning BIOS settings and configuration of X

Why do Linux people always seem to forget that 99.9% of the people who
use a computer are not experts. Try to explain to my mom that you should
press some keys to change resolution (if she knows what that is), or
that she should 'just rebuild the kernel' to include some feature.

        So I have this trackball, called the "Expert Mouse 5.0" made by
Kensington. I really like it, except for the fact that I can't get any of
the 4 buttons to act like a middle button. I can't even get pressing two
buttons at once to work. I've tried emulate 3 button, and generic 3
button, and (on the off chance they were related to each other) Kensington
Thinking Mouse. It behaves the same way no matter what. Has anyone else
had any luck getting the other buttons to work? I've looked around on the
web for a driver specific to this trackball and haven't found any.
Kensington seems not to know that Unix of any flavor exists. Any ideas?

I found the following patch on a German newsgroup. It would be nice if
it were included in the official version of linux...:

In ~linux/drivers/sound/sb_common.c, on line 778 (my be different for
2.2.x):

       if (hw_config->dma2 == -1)
         devc->dma16 = devc->dma8;
-       else if (hw_config->dma2 < 5 || hw_config->dma2 > 7)
+       else if (hw_config->dma2 < 0 || hw_config->dma2 > 7)
         {
           printk ("SB16: Bad or missing 16 bit DMA channel\n");
           devc->dma16 = devc->dma8;

I was wondering: does the HP Laserjet 2100 work with ghostscript?
The ghostscript web page says:
lj5gray  H-P LaserJet 5 & 6 family, gray-scale bitmap;

But I am about to buy the 2100 and plan to use ghostscript. I noticed
this printer uses PCL 6 instead of PCL 5; in any case, does this printer
work OK with ghostscript?

Thanks very much for any help.

fwiw external modems seem to almost universally fall into category d.
(there is some sort of rockwell interface external which has a
proprietary interface and should be avoided. i am not sure if these
are still being made, however.)
