   I see no reason why it shouldn't. The Mach64 X server supports it.

It's not been AT&T for a long time now - the trademark UNIX is now
owned by OPEN, havigf passwed through various hands since AT&T sold
USL off.

And as for technical reasons? Nope, Linux is UNIX in all but name.

Interesting experiment going on at home on that front. I'm
the sysadmin and the (nontechnical, or perhaps technophobic)
spouse and kids are the clueless users.

So far, Linux with KDE is at least as popular with them as
LoseDoze, and *my* job is tremendously easier.

I assume you mean IO address of 0x2a0, not DMA.

I would suggest setting up the card with a DOS utility that came
with it. Disable pnp, so it is stays the way you set it. My guess
is it is changing the interrupt level to something else.

Before you install the card you might want to take a look at
/proc/interrupts
and /proc/ioports.

You may need to add the 'append' statement to /etc/lilo.conf
Although with 2.0.35 and above this doesn't seem to be needed as often.

image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.0.36
        label=linux
        root=/dev/hda2
        append= "ether=10,2a0,eth0"
        read-only

AFAIK, Xfree86 version 3.3.3.1 still says that Trio3D is not supported.
You can try to do something with it, but I have not heard success stories
so far. (I noticed it is usually better to install XF86_SVGA server
instead of XF86_VGA16: even on generic VGA cards it works much faster
and gives better colors. Give it a try.)

It's making life miserable for a lot of us old timers, who have to
patiently explain to another new Windoze customer why their brand new
computer, with the brand new LT Winmodem, cannot connect to the Internet.
They just cant seem to comprehend that all of the current computer
manufacturers are putting Cheap! modems in these expensive machines.

I guess I should be glad that no one makes Cheap! memory, or a Cheap!
hard drive. (those companies all went out of business years ago.)

Bad luck. That card is terrible.
With Xfree86 version 3.3.3.1 (which mentions this card as supported)
I am able to run 800x600 with 8bpp (in addition to 640x480), and on some
occasions I was getting 1200x1024 (when this is the starting mode
of the server). If I try to switch to (or to start with) other modes
like 1024x768, then I am getting a black screen (and no error messages).
At this point I have to switch back (or just to kill the server and try
again). Turning off acceleration or alike does not help at all.

I do not use 1200x1024 resolution because of moire problems.

Actually, with Xfree86 version 3.3.2 (does not support Trident 9750 3D
AGP) I was getting the same results, after I added ClockChip "tgui"
to the Device section...

I was always using XF86_SVGA server (prescribed one).

Andrew

Still wouldn't work, they use Macs at my daughter's school, and our home

YOu can try to edit the /etc/X11/XF86Config file by hand. (Make a backup
copy first). Towards the bottom are settings for video modes and
virtual.
Adjust them to what you like & try it. Check "man XF86Config" for

I *do* run a studio (a small one, mainly album/ep projects for friends
and word-of-mouth clients, but it makes enough money to pay for itself
and satisfy my equipment habit) and I wouldn't use anything else but
Linux despite the shortcomings of available software for editing and
multitrack recording.

Right now I am all analog up to the final mixdown stage. At that
point, I go into a Symetrix 620 A/D converter, then a Digi32 s/pdif
card, straight onto my Linux machine's hard drive. I record using the
program 'brec', which has zero user interface but always gets every
byte onto the hard drive with no errors glitches or dropouts.

I do basic editing using 'xwave', which is a terrible, terrible
program but allows me to graphically trim starts and finishes of
recorded takes.

I use 'sox' to normalize the data and/or convert formats if necessary.
Again no interface but reliable operation and incredibly flexible
selection of operations on the audio file.

I use 'cdrdao' to burn disk-at-once CD-Rs of audio data, or 'cdrecord'
to make track-at-once and data CDs. I can make normal ISO-9660 CDs or
Macintosh HFS cds, and I can write the audio in any format I choose.
The mastering place I like to use is all Macintosh and they can't deal
with anything but Macintosh AIFF or proprietary formats on Macintosh
HFS cds. No problem. And it NEVER, EVER crashes or causes me to lose
data. Linux is my "swiss army chainsaw". I would never use anything
else.

ARE YOU LISTENING, AUDIO SOFTWARE HOUSES?

Don't let it auto-detect, but pass it the base IO address:
  aha1542=0x330
Just addjust the numbers to your settings.

AFAIK, I've got the correct PCIC in there. I also have a PCMCIA
Megahertz modem which works just fine. I'm assuming that with
the wrong PCIC that would be failing as well.

How frustrating.

Thanks for the input.

Thank you for your comical relief.

I adopted 2 new SIMMs for a price of $250. And I donated both of my
bad SIMMs to charity [the good and bad one].

Thanks again,
James Kosin

 Hi!

This is my HD:

<root> [/]
--> hdparm -t /dev/hda

/dev/hda:
 Timing buffered disk reads: 32 MB in 2.55 seconds =12.55 MB/sec
<root> [/]

 and I would like to replace it with an U2W SCSI one.
 Whow fast is yours?

 Sergio

Yes, the aha-1502 should work with the aha-152x driver. You will
probably
need to pass it some parameters to get it detected. Try this:
aha152x=0x340,11,7
which specifies the IO port address, then the IRQ, then the SCSI ID.
Just
modify the numbers to your card's settings.

Levin,

thanks for the help & info. When you say patched, did you actually
apply a patch (patch0X) to the kernel with the 'patch' command or did
you just rebuild your kernel with the 'config' or 'xconfig' utility'. I
did note that on the Kernel.org archives there is at least one patch for
the 2.036 kernel.

Thanks again,
Mark.

p.s (NGs) I have some more very usefull/helpfull correspondence on this
matter which I will post to the ng for the archives. Cheers.
