My "sound card" is the built in CMI8330 on the ASUS P5A-B motherboard.I
have not been able to get it to work in any Linux. I am currently trying
Mandrake 7.0. My card is detected but no combination of settings I have
tryed makes it work. Is it possible to get updated drivers or a BUG fix
to make these work ?

Get the correct driver at http://linnix.com. Avoid the Window Sound System
mode unless you are using custom mixers.
[Reposted for corrected system time. I need a new MB with working clock chip]

I am not familiar with the low-level stuff so bear with me!
[Q.] What is the performance of Linux if it is forced to
use a non-native file system? i.e. suppose that
we are forced to access (masses and masses of) data
that are stored on NTFS but we have the choice of running
Linux, then what is the performance likely to be vs ext2?
How does the file system affect the performance of any
OS for that matter?
Thanks...

Try to get the 3c5x9cfg.exe util and installl (under dos)
the non-pnp modus. Then set the I/O-port and the desired irq
These settings will be written to the nic's nv-ram and after reboot
you will propably able to modprobe the device.

I have this same exact behavior in Mandrake 7.0. I was going to try to
modify Windows (in the registry I believe) to not eject the zip disk at
shutdown. I was planning on leaving the disk in there permanently.
However, I've seen a few posts saying that leaving the disk inserted in
the drive may be bad for the zip drive. What is the problem and how
large is the risk?

I have a Adaptec 29160 running an Mandrake 7.0 witch is based on
RedHat (6.0 I think). It uses the aic7xxx driver with no problems.

Last time I tried, Linux NTFS driver is not stable enough for writing.
DOS file system is quite stable, but you have to be root all the time.
NFS file system is difficult to deal with if files are owned by root.
I do not notice much differences in performance. Those are just my
limited experiences with file systems.

Subject: switching to FVWM from KDE
Date: 11 May 2000 20:19:35 GMT
HI, I've installed RH6.2 as a KDE workstation. I've noticed that
my netscape keep hanging, apparently because of a bug in the JavaVM
(applets cause it to hang).
IN ANY CASE:
I'd like to try running FVWM instead, is there any way I can easily
switch over to using FVWM without major reconfiguration? Perhaps
I can set it up so I can start up either of the two?
Any ideas?
Thx!

Probably dumb questions, but:
1) Did you check the Termination?
2) Have you tried to recreate the conditions of the install and check to
see that your current configuration matches? IE, did you put the
install disk back in, reboot, and see what the install can autodetect?

Subject: netscape hangs in RH6.2 KDE
Date: 11 May 2000 20:26:57 GMT
HI, I've installed RH6.2 as a KDE workstation. I've noticed that
my netscape keep hanging. If I open multiple browsers, if one
hangs it often causes the others to hang.
I've noticed that running the JavaWebServer admin applet (a large
applet) causes it to hang very quickly every time, it seems to
only happen if there is one other netscape open at the same
time.
On my old machine I ran the same applet with 8-10 browsers open at
the same time never with any problem. That was with RH6.1 using
FVWM(2?).
Has anyone experienced this problem?

Thanks for your comments. I'll thinnk about it all again, but I'm
currently starting to think that there is something wrong with the loading
procedure for modules. I'm not an expert, so my reasons for this may
be wrong:-
Firstly, when I played with Gnome toaster, one interpretation of the
error message was that sg module hadn't been loaded.
Secondly, when I tried to mount the drive after re-compiling the kernel
with the iso9660 system as a module, mount complained that that system
wasn't supported by the kernel. But why didn't it just load the
module?
Thirdly, I'm not sure what the module loader is called, but I thought
it was either kmod, or kerneld. If you do ps-ax, neither of these
features as a running process.
Finally, when re-building the kernel, although it completes
successfully, a load of warnings are thrown up, especially at the make
modules stage.
Do you think any of this is plausible?

YMMV on that... I found it worked fine, but I didn't play with it for more
than an hour.
>DOS file system is quite stable, but you have to be root all the time.
Nope. Adding the right incantations to /etc/fstab will allow ordinary
users to access a FAT partition, or allow all users at once to access it.
Main problem is that every file on said FAT filesystem will be owned by
the user who originally mounted it, since FAT knows nothing about
security.
>I do not notice much differences in performance. Those are just my
>limited experiences with file systems.
can't say too much for NTFS, but performance suffers a bit on FAT. Like
so:
time dd if=/dev/urandom of=/win/crud bs=1024 count=4096
real 0m25.689s
user 0m0.010s
sys 0m23.480s
time dd if=/dev/urandom of=~/crud bs=1024 count=4096
real 0m24.581s
user 0m0.010s
sys 0m23.170s
It's worse if there are a lot of file seeks--fragmentation on the FAT
partition and all. Another test with mkisofs showed that having source
and destination files on FAT32 took about 310 seconds, while having those
files on ext2 took about 207 seconds. HTH,

This sounds like aproblem with the IRQ in general. Try using either IRQs of
5 or 10, as I /think/ that an irq of 7 may be one of those "out of bounds"
system values.
To change the irq, goto a prompt and type (as root):
setserial /dev/ttyS? irq 5
( where /dev/ttyS? is the port that your soundcard is plugged into) and this
should set the irq. Failing that, type :
setserial /dev/ttyS? autoconfig
and this should /try/ to guess the right values, although results often
vary.
Good luck!

have you tries setting the irq for that port? Sometimes is gets it wrong.
Use the setserial command (check out the man pages - it's "easy".) ;-)
