My new computer locks up after some minutes. Sometimes it already
complains at boot up with the following message:
(scsi0) BRKADRINT error(0x8):
  Sequencer Ram Parity Error
(scsi0) SEQADDR=0x17
Kernel panic: aic7xxx: unrecoverable BRKADRINT.

My system: Pentium III 500 with 256 MB on Asus P2B-S board with
AIC7890. The scsi devices are a Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-M1201
Fast/Ultra-SE and a IBM DNES-309170W Ultra2-LVD.

I'm running Linux 2.2.10 (2.2.12 has the same problems).

Any ideas what might be broken and how to fix this?

I had the system up and running for three hours (without problems) ---
yesterday. But today an uptime of five minutes is the most I can
get.:-( I don't think I've changed anything at all, I just stress
tested it today with some compilations.

Thanks,

I am having lots of trouble installing my ZIP (parallel port) drive in RH6

I have entered the following:

in /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit

/sbin/insmod ppa

in /etc/conf.modules

alias scsi_hostadapter ppa
alias parprt_lowlevel parport_pc

in /etc/fstab

/dev/sda4 /mnt/zip vfat defaults,noauto 0 0

in /mnt/, I created the zip directory

After booting, I entered mount /mnt/zip and the following appeared:
(I also tried: mount -t vfat /dev/sda4 /mnt/zip)

ppa0: unresolved symbol parport_claim_Rcca15f23

The system showed me that the ZIp drive is connected using sda4.

Does anyone know how to handle this problem ?

Get a package called imwheel and follow the instructions.
It involves putting 2 statements in the XFConfig file
and restarting X. Then you type in imwheel -k and it should
function.

It works with my Logitech Mouseman Wheel mouse.

Try http://www.freshmeat.net for the package.

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I have just purchased a UMAX 1220S scanner, which comes with
a SCSI controller card which is actually a rebadged
Domex (also known as DTC) DTC-3181 scsi card.

On the 18th of April a couple of posters to comp.periphs.scsi
gave information on how one could use this card under Linux.
The last message of the thread from 'Frank' stated that one could
alter the default jumper setting of the card from PNR ('plug &
run') to PNP ('plug & play') upon which Linux would be able
to use interrupts with the card. The default setting doesn't
enable interrupts, making use of the scanner under Linux
quite slow.

Thanks to the information in the messages to date I'm able to
use the scanner under Linux 2.2.12 with no interrupts, but when
I change the jumper the card 'disappears' - neither Linux nor
Windows 98 can find it!

Does anyone have this card working under Linux in Plug-and-Play
mode, using interrupts?

(I tried to contact 'Frank' but he seems to have moved on; his
e-mail address bounces mail)

Thanks,

You should be able to set the actual size of the fonts in the
edit|preferences|appearance|fonts menu. I have mine set ti twelve points.
The fontsize 2 is a reference in the HTML. Default font size is 3. If you
never use a tag to change font size, 3 is it. And if you have 12 points set
as your default size, then anything displayed in a document without a font
size reference, will be displayed in 12 points. If 12 points is too small in
your screen resolution, then bump the font size in your
edit|preferences|appearance|fonts menu...

Hi,

Does anyone know if any PCI2PCI-card exist?
As many others, I have only 4 slots in my PC which are full
and I would like to add other cards.
Or in worst case - would it be possible to build a 1-to-4
PCI splitter using a PCI-PCI bridge (eg. Intel 21152) and would
this require any drivers or would the OSes (Linux and Windows)
see the cards plugged into the expansion without further fiddling?

I made a half-hearted effort at doing this, to no avail. I did find
out about a program called flushb which comes with e2fsprogs but is
not installed by default; that may do the trick, and I'll try it next
time I have a problem. What I could also do is just write a program
which allocates major amounts of memory and writes zeros to it.

I'm using a PC Power and Cooling ATX mid-tower case. It has side-opening
panels and is well designed. Heavy-duty frame and has (3) 5 1/4" and (2)
3 1/2" bays external bays. Case is 17"x17" and seems a little larger
than typical for mid-tower cases, a plus IMO.

I opted for the additional hard drive mounting frame (+$5), so I have
space for 4 hard drives inside the case. I went with 2 high-capacity
fans in addition to the power supply fan and the PC P&C 300W heavy duty
power supply.

The power supply _was_ expensive, but a friendly electronics engineer
took a look at the performance, filtering and hold-up time specs for the
power supply and said "Buy it!". Power supply has some filtering of
input line voltage, unusual for most setups.

Total was about $225. Expensive, yes, but I think I'll get years of use
out of the case. I like the no-nonsense design of the frame and internal
mounting systems and, although it loses on style points, it is solidly
put together (as opposed to Enlight).

Cases are the item that almost everyone skimps on, but a good one will
do you right for years and years.

PS. These cases are used by Penguin Computing for their systems (FWIW).

Hope this helps,

As you can see, I have the non-Sun platform section commented out. I am

Date: Sat, 04 Sep 1999 18:50:17 GMT

Hi,

I need to find a compatibility list for 56k modems, so that I can go
buy one. My wonderful internet-bought computer didn't have a
compatible graphics card (ATI Rage Pro 128gl) so I bought the XiG
server to make it work (works great). Now I find that I've definitely
got a Winmodem - it doesn't work either. It's time to pull my head
out of the sand and research before I buy - saves time AND money.
I've searched a few places already, but haven't hit a definitive list
yet for hardware - mainly searched thru the Redhat site. Actually I
just bought the Cheapbytes Mandrake 6.0 CD and it wouldn't install
(got to the end and keeps hanging), so I've gone back to RH5.1 for
now.

My brother-in-law says to buy a US ROBOTICS 56K internal modem,
although my first impulse was to go ahead and get an external one.
Any advice, or pointers to hardware compatibility lists??

Thanks,

Chip Rose.

JP,

I wonder could you tell me how you are getting the TV card to work
with the SBLive. I have both of the above working fine (ie soundcard
fine with wavs, cd's, mp3's etc, tvcard working in terms of picture)
but I cant get sound to work for the tv progs.

I have checked the mixer settings, tried each of line1, line-in etc
and experimented with different driver loading settings.

If you have sound working with this combo I would be grateful if you
could let me know how

Thanks
