10Kb/s?? since when?
the 16550 runs 115.2KBPS and some can run 230.4KBps
I'm running a Motorola Bit Surfer Pro external. Linux thinks it's a
standard Hayes modem.

Please check in the AK3 section of the list and see if the FCC

Hello Jens,
I had those problems with an old and defective IDE-CDRom. It may be a bus
conflict. The kernel has several drivers for the different IDE-controllers.
Maybe you have to enable a bugfix for you special controller type. But
probable its a defect in your controller.

Subject: stability problems with my system
Date: Sun, 05 Sep 1999 17:04:57 -0500
I've got a question about trouble that I'm having with my system. The
system is very unstable and locks up, hangs or even reboots itself. It
uses a supermicro S2DG2 dual processor mother board and pentium II xeon
400Mhz processors. The system dual boots linux and NT and the problem
affects both operating systems. I've tried everthing in order to track
the problem down.
Finally, the one thing that I've found that makes the problem go away is
disabling the cache on the processor. Of course the system runs dog slow
and it does no good to buy a xeon if you have to dsable it's cache. But,
this is the only thing that makes the system stable.
Now here's the question - Does anyone know whether this means that,
without a doubt, the problem is in the processor (or the processor
module at least)? Is it possible that the problem could still be on the
mother board or in the bios?
Remember, xeons have the cache built onto the cpu module. Also, if the
problem is undoubtedly with the cpu, that would mean that I've recieved
2 flawed cpus.
I would just like an unbiassed opion here before I go back to supermicro
with the results. Further info on my system and the tests I've done is
below.
System Description:
mother board: SuperMicro S2DG2
bios: AMIbios
processor: Pentium II xeon 400Mhz 512k cache
memory: 128MB PC100 ECC registered
hard drive: SEAGATE ST34502LW ULTRA2-LVD 4.5Gb
CD-ROM: PLEXTOR PX-4TS
video: Matrox G200 16MB AGP
I/O cards: none
operating system: dual boots
Red Hat Linux 6.0 and
Window NT 4.0 service pack 3
Complete problem description:
Sometimes the graphics just freeze and the keyboard and mouse both stop
responding. Sometimes the screen goes completely blank and the keyboard
and mouse both stop responding. Sometimes the system reboots itself just
as if the reset switch had been pushed.
Since this is a dual processor sytem, I have 2 of every component. I
even bought an extra video card. I've set up the system with only 1 of
each component - 1 cpu, 1 stick of memory, 1 hard drive. Next I
subsstituted each component 1 at a time. I've substituted EVERY
component including the mother board (I had supermicro replace it), the
cpu, the video card, the power supply, and I've tried ECC and non-ECC
memory from several manufacturers. I've also tried a non-AGP video card
and an IDE hard drive. Nothing has made any difference.
I've also tried some bios changes. I disabled the ECC functionality for
the memory and I've disabled the ECC funtion for the processor's cache.
Still no difference.
The engineer at supermicro had me set up the board outside of the case
so that it was just sitting on a table (a non-condutive one or course)
and not touching the case. The power supply and hard drive were left in
the case, so there were power and data cables going back to the case,
but the MB was isolated. This was supposed to verfiy that there was not
a wiring or grounding problem in the case. Still no difference.
Stability test under linux is a kernel compile. I do not run X windows,
I just work from the console. Sometimes, rather than the problems listed
above I get "fatal Signal 11" (see the url
http://www.BitWizard.nl/sig11/ for more info on this). I've performed
the tests mentioned there and this is definatley a hardware problem.
Under NT winzip will always set it off - just unzip a large file and
~poof! The screen goes blank and thats it. It does not necessarly happen
on the first run, but certainly no more than 4 or 5 runs.

I have two sound cards I'd like to use at the same time, a ISA SB16 and a PCI
Ensoniq 1371. I've made a cable to connect the output of the 1371 to the Line
In of the SB16, and compiled them both as modules. I have the system set to
use the SB16 as the default sound card. I can install the 1371 module, but when
I send sound to /dev/dsp1 I get nothing out. Can this be done, or am I wasting
my time? System is RedHat6 with the 2.2.12 kernel.
BTW, the reason I want to do this is that the SB16 has good tone controls and
hardward MIDI, but the Ensoniq has smoother sound with Xmame.

I bought a couple of these for use with some VXT2000 boxes (without
monitors) that I had picked up cheap. That is one of their original
applications in the DEC world (if you had the high-end graphics card
in the VXT). As he says, they are *quite* nice! With the fixed
resolution and pair of fixed frequencies and sync-on-green they are
problematic to use on PCs, but for just about any workstation or
X-window term of that era (~6 years ago?) there's a good chance this
*was* the high-end monitor offered.

Hi,
The kernel detects only one NIC by default. You have to tell her what
and where the
other NIC is. Or actually in the case of two NICs you have to tell her
both of them.
For me, since they are compiled as modules, they are specified in
/etc/conf.modules:
alias eth0 tulip
alias eth1 ne
options ne io=0x300
If you compile them right into the kernel then use the "append" feature
for lilo.
the Ethernet HOWTO is your friend.

I doubt the speed is a problem. It may start dialling too early,
esp. if you are disabling call-waiting or something similar. If it's
a Hayes-compat. modem, try inserting one or two ','. I have to use
this:
ATDT*70,,123456
The '*70' just turns off call-waiting,

Hello,
Has anybody here ever experienced installing Mandrake Linux 6.0 on an
Socket7+K6 II machine. My system is self-buit with the following
configuration:
MB: BCM(GVC) VP1541 Motherboard
ALI (Acer) M1541/1543C AGP/PCI/ISA Chipset (aladdin V)
CPU: AMD K6II 3D Now 266MHz
HDD: 10.1 GB, IBM Deskstar 14GXP DTTA-371010
Video: Diamond Viper V330, Riva 128, 4 MB

When I tried to install from CDROM, the system always randomly hung on
during the file copy process. I tried to install the system on other Intel

motherboard can't work well in the installation. Could anyone here give me
some advices to work around this problem. I've been working on it for two

You don't have to convert it from mid to wav to listen to midis.
Just configure timidity like this
../configure --enable-audio --enable-esd --enable-gtk
then
make ; make install
or whatever audio/frontend option you want in it instead of esd/gtk
look at ./configure --help for more options in the Timidity directory.
just remember to use --enable-audio option if you want to hear midis
in realtime.
