If the card claims to be a plug-and-play ISA card, then you need to look at
isapnp. Check the manual page for it. Also look at pnpdump. Check some of the
HOWTOs as well.
Basically, you start with pnpdump to create an initial /etc/isapnp.conf file,
then you hand edit that file to get the settings you want. You must be logged in
as root to do this.

Wouldn't that make the test sort of pointless since he would normally run in
multi-user mode? That's sort of like benchmarking Windows 98 by dropping into
MS-DOS mode.

Subject: XFree86 crashing monitor and mouse on Gateway Performace w/ EV700?
Date: Tue, 16 Jan 2001 14:31:52 GMT
Hello,
I am currently attempting to set up Linux on a Gateway
Performance 1000 with 128 MB RAM, Pentium III processor, Sound Blaster
Live sound card, NEC DVD drive, 60 GB IDE hard drive and an nVidia
GeForce card (MX if I recall correctly). The distribution I am using
is Slackware 7.1, with XFree86 4.0.2 and Linux kernel 2.2.18. I am
using an EV700 monitor.
Recently, I was running XFree86 while under a heavy CPU load
and in the middle of a large download, and running irqtune so that
the modem would get higher priority in the IRQ listing. I attempted
to switch virtual terminals from X to a text console, as I've done many
times before without incident, when the monitor popped up a box
like it's configuration screen - except this time, it was complaining
that I had sent it a bad frequency (15 horizontal, approximately,
if I recall correctly) and it gave 20 seconds until it suspended itself.
It locked up all operations, and I was unable to use the mouse or
keyboard, or power switch. I was forced to unplug the computer. I
plugged it in again, and this time it booted correctly - except,
however, the PS/2 mouse was completely nonfunctional. Although Windows
ME and Linux apparently detected it, neither reacted to mouse movement
or button clicks. Unplugging and plugging the mouse back in had no
effect. I was able to restore mouse function after turning the
computer off again and restarting it, as well as doing some BIOS
modifications.
It is now working correctly. However, the pressing questions
are will it happen again, and why is it doing this? This is a
particularly pressing question, as I only have two weeks in which
to return it. I have been unable to reproduce the problem after
several attempts. I correctly configured X - the horizontal refresh
is 31-69, and the vertical refresh is 50-160 as per specifications
on the Gateway website. The problem occured when X was in 1280x1024
mode, which the monitor reports to be using a horizontal sync of 63.9
and a vertical refresh of 60.0. Making things stranger was that the
monitor complained when the refresh rate was BELOW the specified range,
not above it.
I'm rather pressed for time with this; as I've said, I only
have two weeks before time runs out on the return policy. Does
anyone have any ideas or solutions? Anything you can tell me about
this would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you for your time.
-Mike

Let me second the 503+ / K6 combination! I've had one for about 2 years now
which I've recently
handed off to my better half and it's still going strong. There are a few
setup issues you'll need
to be wary of in the 503+ bios (AGP settings, memory timings) and the only
way to get those perfect is trial and error (and a recent bios flash.) The
damn thing never really did work properly in Windows (buggy agpgart drivers
from via) but in Linux it was schweet (still is! Running Debian right now!)

The install disk for RedHat 6.1 (or was it 6.2) found and accessed
the CD ROM correctly on this 80 Mhz 486 system, circa 1995. The
problem was that it couldn't read the whole disc, and the install
failed. I could check this in W98 by "copy /s *.* nul:" to find
out where the actual disk failed.
Same thing with several install disks that came with various
books. I have had no trouble with original issue uSoft disks. In
general I copy them complete to the hard drive for further use,
and compress and save them with ARJ. ARJ allows adding recovery
info, so that future media failures can be recovered.
I have about 2G available on my drives here when and if I get
around to trying again.

I have an HP 8565C that has an RTL8139 card in it and it's
working flawlessly. I'm dual booting Win 98SE and RH 6.1.
The card I have is made by Accton. I didn't actually look at
the chipset but it was detected in cat /proc/pci as SMC
1211TX or some such thing. (I'm elsewhere on another machine
and can't check it right now.) According to the HP website,
your machine has the same card as mine but that doesn't mean
much. HP's notorious for buying a huge lot of something
cheap, relabeling it as HP and installing it in boxes going
out the door. I'm using the native rtl8139 driver, although
Accton has a Linux driver for the card available for d/l on
their site. I've compared the source for the two drivers and
they're identical save for some comments at the top of the
file. What does cat /proc/pci say about the card? I had some
trouble with getting a free IRQ for the card. In the end I
had to shuffle around stuff in the PCI slots. You say the
rtl8139 driver "doesn't work." What sort of error messages
are you getting? What happens when you do insmod rtl8139?

How do I mount an L120 floppy drive, which is an IDE drive. Do I treat
it as a floppy or as a hard drive? If as a hard drive, what number does
it have?
Thanks
