Subject: NE2000 PCI help
Date: Tue, 07 Sep 1999 06:37:42 GMT

I have just installed RedHat 6.0 release 2.2.5-22
on my Pentium 75. I have an ORNET PCI network
card which I think is a NE2000 PCI compatible
card. I had no problems with RedHat 5.2. I have
entered the I/O and IRQ values as suggested on
RedHat FAQ but get the message :
   ne.c:No NE*000 card found at i/o = 0x600
./ne.o: init_module: Device or resource busy

The I/O and IRQ settings are correct in Windows
NT.

I'd really appreciate some help.

Jennifer Barker

This isn't exactly what you were asking about, but you might want to
investigate this product for temperature monitoring.

A colleague has successfully used this with a Linux system and several
sensors to monitor the temperature in a computer room. The nice thing
is, it's RS232 based, so it doesn't require an exotic card.

as86 is the assembler part of the gcc compiler...
I'd check that you have it installed (You should if it gets that far)

You did do

make [menuconfig|config|xconfig]
make dep
make clean

first, didn't you?

I have the same card, and it was not supported in kernel 2.2.4
(I also tried the bttv driver from the xawtv package with no success)
In kernel 2.2.11 and 2.2.12 it IS supported.

I'm using XawTV and all works fine.......good picture + working sound.

But I still cannot get KWinTV to work correctly. I only get sound and
a black screen in the application. The app. finds channel 56 automatically
(my cable channel) so why do I get no picture? The capture on/off button
doesn't do anything.

It can't be the bttv driver setup since it's proved to work by Xawtv. No
wonder I was having so many problems getting the card to work...i was using
KWinTV for ages before switching to xawtv.

Does the Video 4 Linux setup have anything to do with the problem? when I
select this from the multimedis menu in K nothing seems to happen!

I had a similar problem a while back... According to 3com's tech
support, even though it's not a winmodem, Linux won't run it unless you
jumper it for a fixed IRQ. (turn off the PNP feature)

First you have to look in the instruction of the modem. There is a
command like AT X2 (maybe X3 or X4, i think).
This command ignores the normal beep on the line and the modem starts
to dial.
Try to put this command to the kppp. Sorry, but I'am at work and I
don't know yet which section you have to put it.

I hope this will help a little.

I used to have a lot of bus hangs with a Seagate SCSI DAT drive, until=20
I changed the SCSI settings to Asynchronous transfer, I've not had any=20
problems since even with single backups that fill almost the whole=20
tape which wouldn't have got 10% done before.

Make that 1020 for Microsoft and 3 cylinders for the linux /boot partition.
Then you won't have any lilo problems, provided, of course, that the kernel
file is in the /boot file system instead of in the root file system.

An earlier Redhat 5.2? came with a single user license of BRU that was not a
demo. I don't think that's the case any more.

These days, we've gone back to tar which even does incrementals all on its
own.

All of the unix versions comming out of AT&T and Berkely used the standard
(pre-ANSI) C compiler wihout any of these extensions. When necessary
pure assembly code was also used in places where the C compiler wasn't
adequate.

In your dial up script - where U give the init script for your modem try to
say ATX1 - it's the same thing. It initialises the modem in such a way, that
it will _not_ wayt the dial tone. ATX1 is the standard modem command, which is
used to disable "wait for dial tone"

Put

atX3

in your modem dialing script, or (better) write it into your
modem's NVRAM. Run minicom and then type

atX3&w

then your modem should respond with OK . Now quit minicom and have
fun.
