I am using Mandrake 7.2 on IBM Thinkpad 570. After loding USB drivers
(usbcore, usb-storage,usb-uchi) I can see following messages with usbview:

USB Disk
Manufacturer: OnSpec Electroinc, Inc.

Serial Number: 5424ADD524
Speed: 12Mb/s(full)
USB Version: 1.00
Device Class: 00 (>ifc)
Device Subclass:00
Device Protocol: 00
Maximum Default Endpoint Size: 8
Number of Configurations: 1
Vendor id: 07c4
Product id: 0103
Revision Number: 9.04

However, I can not mount it because I can not find it in /dev/sda or
/dev/sda1 .....(try hundreds of them).

Anyone can help me with it?

By the way, the hard disk is a 2.5" IBM Travelstar 4GB.

Thanks!

Daniel

You can buy rack-mountable PC cases and put them on 19" racks.

Hi all,

I just picked up a CMD PCI-0649 IDE controller card which I have
connected to an internal tape drive.

http://www.cmd.com/ProductInfo.cfm?ProdID=168

I'm running RH7.0 (with all the available updates :) ) on a 2.2.16
kernel.

I was reading the compatability lists and, while it looks like I can
specify a command line argument in lilo.conf to probe for it (
append="ide2=0x1e8,0x3ee,11" ), it doesn't seem to come up.

Is there something I need to set in the kernel, or is the ATA/100 chip
not supported in current, stable kernels?

...

OK, I just did some digging and see that there are some patches at
www.linux-ide.org, but are they what I really need (little or no doc on
that site).

Thanks!
Mike

ifconfig looks normal both interfaces are up and pingable from the linux box, but
other

I'm not worried about the iptables stuff, I just want to be able to at least ping my

Anyone seen this before?
Any suggestions?

Yes. Plus, if you enable disk journaling, you can cut the power and
throw out all disk changes -- this is cool for testing software.

Hi,
blind shot - I also have that motherboard w/ 2 fujitsu disks on
primary ide connected by normal (40 wires) cable, but bios erratically
thinks that the second is UDMA66. So I have a bad performarce on that
disk. When I set primary slave udma to disable and system started to

Timo,

Saw this on another post in another NG. Apparently there is an issue using
the Promise ATA100 controller in UDMA mode. I'm personally having better
success trying to get the 2.4.0 kernel to work with it. The new kernel
includes support for the Promise chipset(s) and includes a "Special UDMA"
feature you can turn on and compile into the kernel.

Might try that.

Good Luck,
KW

He is right, but it is expensive. 2 or, in a few cases 3, drives
per bus seems to have been a constant for two decades. If the
drives arbitrate badly, one each will win. But I hope they

Mikael,

I am running the Asus A7V M/B with 256MB ECC PC133 SDRAM, 45GB IBM ATA100
HDD, 3dfx 5500 AGP (Voodoo5) and the AMD Athlon 1000. System runs RH great
if I run the HDD on the VIA ATA66 controller.

Am now playing with the 2.4.0 kernel to get the ATA100 support. I've gotten
it to recognize the Promise controller. Now trying to get the HDD to boot
off the Promise controller. Should have that fixed in the next day or two.

All in all it's been OK so far. You may want to use a different Linux distro
from the RH 7.0 I chose. I understand SuSE and Mandrake 7.1 support the
Promise ATA100 in their current configs without needing the 2.4.0 kernel.

Good Luck,
KW

I have this config at my house. Planned on adding Linux later next month. My

The 2.4.0 kernel DOES have Experimental support for PPPoE . . . if you need

What chipset is on your motherboard? Is it supported and enabled by your
current kernel?

FYI: I'm using a VIA VT82c686B chip with ATA100 and an DTLA-307045. The chip
seems to be supported by linux-2.2.18, so I get ~35MB/s from hdparm. My
hdparm setting are:

        hdparm -c1 -d1 -m16

Drew,

I also have the A7V and an IBM 45GB HDD. I'm using RH 7.0 and have had to
play with compiling the 2.4.0 kernel. Yes, the 2.4.0 kernel includes support
for the Promise 206xx chipset(s). Now I'm having issues getting the LILO
setup properly to boot off the IBM HDD on the Promise. Works fine on the VIA
ATA66.

Fear not. I've only been playing with Linux for about two and a half weeks
now. If I can do it, anyone can. Suggest you hit the RedHat web site. They
have a fairly good HOWTO on doing kernel upgrades. Also, make sure you print
the README file in the 2.4.0 kernel source file(s). That also has great tips
in it.

Good Luck,
KW

Linux has never and will never support winmodems ( or so I've heard) the
reason why is becuse they rely completly on the processor to do what a real
modem's hardware is supposed to do and linux dudes have a stygmatizm with
throwing away processor time...... duhh ya i know i can;t spell ;)

Subject: HELP- Changing DISPLAY settings
Date: Thu, 18 Jan 2001 13:58:41 -0500

As will become painfully obvious in a moment, I'm first time linux user, and
first time to this group. Apologies in advance.
Any help with the following problem would be greatly appreciated!!

When attempting to run a tool called QQEA, I get the following error message
when garnet begins to load:

Loading GARNET. . .
 %%%%%%Loading CLX%%%%%%%
Connection to socket failed.
An unhandled error occurred during initialization:
Could not open a display for "".

You must already be running X to load or compile Garnet. Your
DISPLAY environment variable must be set with the name of the machine on
which the GARNET windows will be displayed. Please exit LISP and execute
one of the following commands:
setenv DISPLAY unix:0.0
setenv DISPLAY 0.0

We are running RedHat Linux 6.1, and I get the same message when I submit
from the shell prompt with and without the GNOME Xwindows interface running
in the background. Nor does the Bash shell recognize the "setenv" command.
In troubleshooting this same problem months ago, I recall that I redefined
the shell variable (somehow) and typed "qqea $DISPLAY," which resolved the
problem. However, I don't recall what file we edited to produce this
solution. I looked in /etc/sysconfig, inittab, and even played with
changing the 'qqea' script, but with no success.

Any HELP? I'm afraid that the solution is something quite simple, though is
beyond me at this point. Thanks for any help!
