I have Mandrake 7.0 and an SBLive, and sndconfig worked fine, with no
switches. That is, as well as it used to work with my AWE-64.
Playing works fine, but MIDI doesn't. So I use timidity instead of
playmidi. I haven't tried recording yet.

Yes, this is all true. The original poster is right to be suspicious
of Lexmark, though; while the Optra line is the most Linux-compatible
line of printers around, the Color Jetprinter line is the most
Linux-INcompatible around. It's rather unusual for a company to so
completely `suck' and `rule' at the same time ;)
If anyone's out to buy a Linux inkjet, the Lexmark Optra 40 really is
the best thing going at the moment. It prints like a last-generation
4 or 6 color inkjet (which is to say rather well on half-decent paper,
and not bad for photos on glossy stock with the photo cartridge) abeit
at the usual HP/Lexmark "integrated cartridge" prices.
Once the Optra 40s run out, I'll have to reassess the situation. I'm
thinking some of the Epsons will be good except for the fixed heads;
several of the current models print very well with the gimp-print
Ghostscript printer driver. HP and Canon, meanwhile, are busily
producing ever more undocumented printers.

Subject: External Modem Troubles

Can anybody help?
I just bought a nice new Zoltrix Rainbow 56k Blue Fighter external modem to
replace my internal modem. I am under the impression that external modems
WILL work with linux, however I have a problem that I cannot specify as a
Linux problem or a Hardware problem.
I can dial into my ISP (freenetname) using minicom and get a login prompt.
Once I log in
a get a load of garbage on screen (which according to the manuals I've read
indicates a good connection), and then I get NO CARRIER and the connection
drops.
Why? What have I done wrong?
I am running Mandrake 7, and it's a fresh install (only did it on the
weekend).
The modem works fine on my Windoze 2000 box.
Could the modem still be windoze only? All error correction etc. is
hardware based so I assume not, but I could be wrong.
Any help would be appreciated. If it's not a good modem to be using I need
to take it back to the shop soon!
Thanks,
Nick Gushlow

hi
i need a way to translate from a filename -> the numbers of the sectors it
takes on the disk.
i got the file blocks numbers, but i don't know how to translate them to the
pyshical sector numbers.
i guess that simply multipling block_num by ( block_size/ sector_size ),
won't do it, since i need to find the pyshical address of the first block in
the file system.
so maybe the formula should be
#define blk2sector(blk_num) ( (blk_num * (blk_size/sector_size)) +
first_block_pyshical_addr )
will this do the work ?
where can i find the address of the first block in the FS ?
do data blocks numbers starts from 0, or that block with index 0 is the boot
sector and than super_block, inodes.. ?
any help will be appricated

currently to get it to work i need to load the megaraid module by hand:
insmod megaraid
and then i can mount the filesystem located there.
i've looked (in vain) for the line i need to
add to /etc/conf.modules to get it to load
at boot time, but i've had NO luck. anyone have
an idea how to do this?
thus far i've tried things like:
alias raid megaraid
which of course doesn't work.

Hi all,
I've installed Mandrake 7.0 on a new drive, and having no success with
getting CDs to play. Mandrake doesn't recognize the sound card,
apparently. AudioDrive 2.01.23 shows up in the Windows Multimedia
settings screen, listing ES1879/1869/1878/1887/1888 AudioDrive 2.01.23
as the current driver. The machine is a Compaq Deskpro 4000, sound card
of unknown origin. The ESS site does not list drivers for anything
higher than 1689. If anyone can assist I'd appreciate it.
Thanks,

That depends on you, higher resolution more desktop space, but smaller
icons, text, etc. bad for eyes.
> Does the Xircom 10/100 Modem/Lan card work properly?
Don't know for sure, but the new Linksys EtherFast 10/100+ 56K Modem
works and probably less expensive than the Xircom. If you getting the
Linksys, then I would recommend not getting the internal built-in modem
(it's a win-modem) and doesn't work with linux yet, although you
could "turn it off" in the bios, but why bother?
> Besides more disk and the 15.4" screen, are there any other
> differences between the 5000 and the 7500.
The 7500 around 3 pounds heavier and half an inch taller in height.
There is more resistance with the trackpad mouse buttons on the 5000.
5000 is a one spindle device, the 7500 is a two spindles device. Beside
the battery, you can plug in two add-ons in the 7500; modular zip and
cd-rom without having to swap it like in the 5000.
The 7500 is overall faster than the 5000, if you don't mind the weight.
There are rumors on a new dell laptop slated to be release next week.
It's a Inspiron 9000? No definitive specs on it, but probably an ati
mobility 128/16 megs max and speedstep 733. You might want to wait at
least one to two weeks and the price will drop on the 600, 650
speedstep. However you gonna have a corollary trying to setup the new
video card. XFree86 3.6.6 suppose to support the mobility P, but it is
no way an automatic install.
> Any problems with SpeedStep?
Don't have any yet, I turn that feature off anyway. It runs at full 650
speed. Don't feel any significant speed increase though. bummer.
If you get the lcd with some dead pixels, then send it back for a
replacement, you have 30 days. They will try to tell you is normal.
Just tell them you want a refund, and they will promptly send you a
replacement system.

Subject: SCSI bus resets
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hopefully someone can help me with this problem. The company I work
for is running our accounting software on RH 6.1, PII 300, 256 MB,
Adaptec 2940U2W, Seagate ST39103LW 9.1 GB HD. The problem we are
having is random (it seems to happen more when the server is loaded
down) SCSI bus resets. I recall seeing a thread in here approx.2 weeks
ago where someone was having the same problem. Someone else replied
that kernel 2.3.99pre3 fixed the problem. Does anyone know what the
problem is, how well the pre3-pre5 kernels would fix this issue, and
what other bugs we would have to deal with as a result of the upgrade?
This is very valuble data, and we need to find a solution rather
quickly. This also impairs the ability to use the tape drive for
regular backups, since it is an SDT-7000 SCSI unit. We end up FTP'ing
the files to our UNIX server, but sometimes the bus error pops up in
the middle of transfers. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a similar problem with a Kingston KNE-20bt card. This
problem occurs both under Msdos using the Kingston drivers and Linux.
What I think may be happening, at least on my card, it likes to
autoswitch between 10base-T and the BNC 10-base-2 connection.. If
there has been NO I/O for awhile the card starts playing games. On
mine I have to unplug the 10-base-2 connection cable and plug it in
until it will work (sigh). Too bad there is no way via a physical
jumper to say "Listen you piece of hardware! I am using 10-base-2!"
Right now it is the only card that works on my IBM-XT in 8 bit mode
(the driver sets this up under dos). Its possible that yours is doing
something similar and switching between 100base-t and 10base-t
data modes. I believe the solution for both of us is similar. Get
another card from another company.

I also have a mouse on com1, but I couldn't tell you what protocol I am

is equal to com1). I have used mouseconfig, setup, linuxconf till I am

XF86Setup, Xconfigurator, and SaX are the most common ways of determining
this. The auto-detection is pretty good. However, a *LOT* of cheap nasty
onboard video cards do not actually have any memory of their own and
instead share^H^H^H^H^Hsteal some of the main memory to use for graphics.
Saying "X don't work" is the least helpful thing you could've done. Post
the distribution you're using and the exact make and model of your onboard
video card--the output of "cat /proc/pci" can be very helpful here. Read
the documentation that came with your distribution, visit
http://www.xfree86.org , and try one of the aforementioned X configuration
programs if you haven't already.

Yes, right now there is a problem with CPU speed changes. Timing loops are
initially calculated at boot time only. Later timing changes can really screw
up things like port access and CPU slices. There's currently a debate on how
to handle this since by the time you get a notice back from the BIOS, things
can already be &*%$&! The same occurs in laptops that slow down the CPU when
running on battery.

The steps for doing this vary somewhat depending on distro. You
definitely need to edit /etc/inittab , where there will be a line like so:
id:2:initdefault
Change the "2" to 5 for RedHat and derived, 3 for SuSE. This will start X
automatically upon bootup. As for the 24-bit color depth, just edit your
XF86Config. In 3.3.x, you want a line like
DefaultColorDepth 24
within whichever "Screen" section you're using. (RedHat's Xconfigurator
seems to generate huge XF86Configs that are hard to understand.
Persevere.)
