I am having problems with my standard ISA 3Com 3c509b ethernet card. I
found a c file that has a driver supposedly in it. I also read that I
have to build it into the kernel or I can make it a module. Ummm, what?
ANY help would be GREATLY appreciated...
Thanks,
Josh

Many people have trouble with lilo. Personally, I gave up and
boot from floppy. The added delay is irrelevant since my machine
is always on.
Previously I found that installing a boot partition only seems
to work if lilo runs on that same disk.
Then there are limitations to the position of the kernel on the
disk. Has to be somewhere in the first 512 sectors, I believe.
Check the man pages, howto's and the newsgroups.
So in short: create a boot floppy during installation and install
lilo afterwards.

Patching the kernel is not required to boot. Did I miss something?
Good luck.

Indeed it's about a two line shell script used as a print filter. Some
people think printing on Linux sucks but the flexability that print filters
provide has saved my butt more than once. Actually, if he can get the list
of excape codes for his printer chances are there is one to change it's
behavior rather than having to fix the files being fed to it.

AFAIK, Pacbell doesn't use normal DHCP. It's either a static address,
PPPoE, or PPPoATM. They do support Linux in a limited way, with either a
static address, or PPPoE. The Speedstram PPPoATM modems will not work. If
they provide you with the wrong hardware, they'll exchange it for something
that works with Linux. They won't set it up for you, but they do suggest
Enternet PPPoE software for Linux, and the Pacbell website even has
instructions on installing and configuring it.
The Kingston works fine. It's in the list of Linux' supported devices, and
in the lists in the Redhat/Mandrake hardware configuration tools.
Yes, the system will hang at for a minute during the boot process, as it
tries to resolve the eth0 interface. But it can't because while the network
card and modem are connected, the PPPoE interface is not, since it runs
under Linux, which hasn't started yet. Don't worry. The machine will move
on and start after this, and have no trouble connecting once you have your
PPPoE software up and running.
Now, that PPPoE software: forget the Enternet setup that Pacbell
recommends. It's too much trouble to install and configure. And if the
Windows version is any indication, it doesn't work too well either. (I
could never even get it running, so I gave up on it.) Instead, download the
PPPoE software from www.roaringpenguin.com It's a breeze to install and
configure. It leads you through a text based dialog, where all you do is
enter your username, password, and DNS addresses. After that, just go into
DrakConf/Startup Services, and push the button for "adsl". That's it.
You're connected.
Your machine will still hang for a minute while trying to start eth0 at
bootup, but it doesn't matter. Once it gets past that and starts, you'll be
online when you log in.
Good luck,
Matt O.

Hi guys,
I have a problem applying 2 patches to the same kernel....
Both patches make modifications to the same source-files, but when I

Subject: Cannot write CDs with WebCDRoast, while gnometoaster works
Date: Fri, 26 May 2000 12:03:54 +0200
Hi,
This might be a bit obscure, but this is the closest NG I can access
relating to this problem.
We would like to use a machine as a cd-writing network accessory (among
other things), and after seeing WebCDRoast (http://www.webcdroast.de) I
thought I had found our solution. Since we can't afford to have our
cd-writer not working, I am experimenting at home with my Mandrake 7
install (we will be running Redhat 6.2 at work).
My cd-writer does work under linux using gnometoaster, I can write and
erase CD-RWs. I managed to get apache configured to run the perl scripts
that show the available writers, but I cannot write a CD. When I click
on "Brennen" (I assume this is "Burn", my german is rusty), it
immediately brings up a javascipt window saying the CD is finished (no,
I only have a 6*2*2 writer, so it couldn't even write the TOC in that
time).
Looking through apache's logs, I found some errors, the only one which
applies was something to the effect of:
cannot open /root/.mkisofsrc
I have never used mkisofsrc directly, so this file probably does not
exist, I haven't checked, sorry. It looks as if the scripts run as root
(is this correct).
Has anyone got this to work, or can anyone offer suggestions that WILL
help ?
I have already sent email to the only addresses available for WebCDRoast

Thanks
Buchan
