Hi all,
I really hope someone here could help me.

I'm trying to burn a couple of CDs from my laptop, through a 10MBit
NIC (via samba), mkisofs and finally cdrecord; the actual CDRW drive
is a Mitsumi CR-4804TE, and is housed in an old-ish, but capable P100
box. It's an IDE drive running via SCSI emulation. I'm burning at 2X.

Just over an hour ago, I managed to burn two coasters, one straight
after the other. Personally, I cannot see any good reason for this
happening, as the FIFO has never dropped below 87% (according to
cdrecord), so I doubt it could be anything to do with the network
connection.

However, I do get the same consistent error message whenever the drive
packs up. The (almost) full output is quoted at the end of this post;
I suppose the following is the most interesting bit:

> cdrecord: Input/output error. write_g1: scsi sendcmd: retryable error
> CDB: 2A 00 00 01 14 94 00 00 1F 00
> status: 0x2 (CHECK CONDITION)
> Sense Bytes: 70 00 05 00 00 00 00 0A 00 00 00 00 24 00 00 00
> Sense Key: 0x5 Illegal Request, Segment 0
> Sense Code: 0x24 Qual 0x00 (invalid field in cdb) Fru 0x0
> Sense flags: Blk 0 (not valid)

> write track data: error after 145006592 bytes
> Sense Bytes: 70 00 00 00 00 00 00 0A 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00

Now, I did do a search for a couple of keywords in there, and it did
turn up a couple of mailing list archives where people have complained
about similar problems. However, none of the posted problems seem to
be resolved, or at least, I can't find it... >_<

Does /anyone/ know why my CDRW is doing this?
It's quite annoying when every other one turns out to be a coaster,
not in terms of cost, (hey, they're dirt cheap), but in the amount of
time it's wasting me... Grr...

/Liyang

nb: the command line I'm using is (snipped from a shell script)

mkisofs -allow-lowercase -graft-points -l -iso-level 3 -r -J -jcharset
default -pad -relaxed-filenames -ucs-level 1 -q -V $VOLUME_LABEL . |
cdrecord -vvvvvvvvvv speed=2 fs=8m dev=/dev/sg0 -force -timeout=120 $*
-data -pad -

That's all one line, btw.

This doesn't help solve the problem but I do have a question that I feel
I should ask. Are you testing this process using cdrs or cdrws? If you
are using cdrs, WHY? Use cdrws, therefore you won't be making ANY
coasters b/c u can just erase them.

I'm using CDRs.

My major gripe with the problem is that it takes up too much of my
time, and I still have a huge spindle of blanks to use up...

Subject: HP Colorado 2.5/5 GB Tape Drive Stopped working
Date: Thu, 23 Nov 2000 05:06:44 GMT

As the title says, I have an HP Colorado 5GB internal IDE tape drive.
It had been working perfectly. I had not used in in ~3 months when I
decided to do another backup.

When I tried to preform my backup I received the following errors:

ide-tape: Block location is unknown to the tape
ide-tape: Block location is unknown to the tape
ide-tape: ht0: I/O error, pc = 8, key = 2, asc = 3a, ascq = 0
ide-tape: ht0: I/O error, pc = 8, key = 2, asc = 3a, ascq = 0
ide-tape: Block location is unknown to the tape

Thinking I made some system change that broke things I used my custom
boot/root rescue disks to boot and try to read from the tape. I
received the same set of errors.

I have tried upgrading to 2.2.17 with no luck at all. A search on
deja.com and google have only shown similar problems. No solution was
mentioned.

If anyone can suggest a solution I'd greatly aprecite it. Please let me
know if you need additional information.

Try different IRQ's in isapnp.conf. 5 or 7 seem to work ok
as long as they're not taken up by something else. Better yet,
check what 'doze uses if you have a dual boot system.

Should this not be ":lp=/dev/lp0:\"? Unless you have more than 1
parallel port and device attached, it should probably be /dev/lp0 as the
numbering system was changed at about RH5.1 or thereabouts, and the
first one is now lp0..

I personally have had much better luck wipeing lpr and printtool, and
putting in LPRng, and lprngtool. rm the printcap and have lprngtool
make a new one. Even gimp's print works now.

Hi,
Thanks for your help.

I followed your advice but the cause seem relevant to
firmware : linux commands don't show any thing odd.
ifconfig displays 2 interfaces, eth0 and lo0
netstat displays 2 routes too : eth0 and lo0
              (nothing on ppp0 anywhere)
the default route is eth0 !

I investigate now on fimrware : i suspect the fact that my Lan card
is an ISA card so my PCI-modem, which uses IRQ-share protocol,
doesn't recognize ISA component.
Linux lspci command says that the WinModem uses IRQ-10
and MS-Windows98-system-Info utility says that EtherlinkIII uses IRQ-10
too !
I'll keep you informed about my researches.

Richard Leou
