Err.. no. Maybe I'd explain my problem more clear. You're right about the
bass output. The soundcard has a left and a right signal output. Both go to
the bass module. The 4-point surround speakers get their signal from the
bass module. When playing mp3 files all the signals go to the 4 small
speakers. When I switch the output cables @ the soundcard, all sound comes
from the bass speaker, no sound from the 4 small ones. This only occurs
with mp3 files under RH 6.2, Windows is just fine. I'm a newbie with Linux,
but I'd like this thing to work correctly...

The latter is not compleatly true, (IMHO)
if you forget to include scsi-cd and disk support, you _can_ burn cd's
but you just can't read them :-)

I'd go for a Yamaha SCSI and a cheap (but supported) scsi-adapter.

Firstly, a disclaimer - I hope I have posted to the correct groups, and
that I have not asked a question which has such an obvious answer that I
am condemned to flame hell for all time.
I have installed RedHat 6.2 on two machines, and have discovered the same
problem on each - I do not seem to be able to access any external devices
through either my parallel or serial ports. I know that they work - both
machines are dual boot with some flavour of Windows - and on one of the
machines, I have run a previous version of RedHat (6.0), and been able to
connect to my printer without any problems.
For more detail - I am running a reasonably recent Dell box, and trying to
set up an HP 4 plus on the parallel port, and also an external modem on
the serial - I have never received a response from either of them
(although with a previous installation, the printer installed with no
problems.) I am not proficient enough to know how to do any lower-level
testing than simply following the howto and hoping it works. I have tried
every conceivable ttys for the external modem, and the error I get from
both is always along the lines of 'Device not responding' or 'There is no
device attached'.
Can anybody Help?
Mark.

And, while this raises the cost marginally, it also lowers by one the
number of ports you need on your hub/switch. In fact, you might even
save money by buying a 100BTX *only* hub, and then a 10BT *only* card
to go to the DSL. This way, your LAN will run at 100Mb, and you'll
still be able to use the 10Mb (probably) DSL.
Considering that true autosensing, mix'n'match hubs are pretty
expensive (and difficult to find for low numbers of ports), this may
be a good solution.

Subject: Help... X messed up my monitor
Date: Tue, 04 Jul 2000 17:30:05 GMT
I just reinstalled Linux and set up X exactly as I did before. I'm not
really sure of my monitor's specs since I lost the manual so I guessed
on them. I used the configuration for a week without any problems
whatsoever so when I reinstalled I used the same config. Well, the very
first time I logged out from X, when it changed resolutions, my monitor
got screwed up and now the screen is larger than the monitor so I can't
see everything and I can't get it back. I set up the monitor with my
Win98 PC and it still didn't change back.
Is my monitor permanently damaged, or is there a way to fix this?
Any help's appreciated,

Or `dd if=/dev/zero of=<drive> ibs=<sector size> count=<sectors on the
drive>'. For example, on a standard 1.4M floppy, `dd if=/dev/zero
of=/dev/fd0 ibs=512 count=2880'.
You asked in at least two Linux groups, so I assume you have Linux.

What kind of NT server? Is it configured as a gateway, as a firewall or
does it only have some kind of web-proxy?

You should tell Linux to use the right gateway. Sometimes a gateway is
also called a router.
> Im willing to change the proxy software(s) at the ntserver.
This is probably your hard work. You might have to replace some stuff
here. Why do you have an NT-machine as a proxy to the internet? What
kind of purpose does it serve? If the purpose is that you only should be
able to surf the web then you will not be able to telnet out without
reconsider this purpose.

First of all you will need a working sound driver and a working X
installation. Then for applications you might want to try
xanim for movies
alsaplayer for music if you are using the ALSA sound drivers.
xmms for music otherwise

Yep, that'll do it. With VNC you get to decide the size(or rather:
resolution) of your desktop as well. So you can even run the palmtop VNC
viewer against a KDE desktop by specifying a lower resolution. Quite
workable. And with a windoz client, you'll be happy to know that if
(when?) you client crashes, you won't loose your desktop. Just reconnect
and get going again.

How did you "set it up with Win98"? Does it work in Win98? In XWindows, if
you press the num_lock key (so the number lock light is on) using
CTRL-ALT-+ and CTRL-ALT-- (where "+" and "-" are the numberic keypad plus
and minuses) will toggle through the resolutions you have enabled in your
X-configuration file (assuming you have more than one resolution there).
If the monitor does not work in Win9x in safe mode, it may have died (or
gotten very sick and need to be taken care of).

When you compiled the kernel did you include support for more than 4
serial devices? Probably not. I wouldn't bet on ttyS4 working then. Which
is your first free ttySx? I will assume ttyS1. Configure the modem to
whatever. Then use setserial on ttyS1 to set it to the same settings. You
can set ttyS1 (or even ttyS0) to irq_11 and whatever IO_port... (the fact
that DOS calls it "com5" is irrelevant).
