Just a thought: you may need to tell your card (using AT commands) that
you're talking to an ESTI (NET5, EuroISDN) type of exchange, and that
you're wanting to call out with a particular protocol type (eg. X.75).
NO CARRIER often means that the other end has rejected your call due to
some incompatibility.

Subject: Need help with CD-RW install
Date: Sun, 09 Jul 2000 14:23:57 -0700
I have a Creative CD-RW drive (model MK4214). I'm trying to get it to
work with my Abit motherboard in a SMP configuration, so far without
success. I'm using the stock kernel that ships with Red Hat 6.1, 2.2.12.
I was following the instructions on the CD Writing HOWTO. Since this is
an EIDE drive, I had to add the SCSI emulation support (in-kernel, not a
module), and the following additional kernel config mods:
SCSI support - y
SCSI disk support - m
SCSI tape support - m
SCSI CD-ROM support - m
Enable vendor-specific extensions (for SCSI CDROM) - y
Now... after configuration, I ran
make dep
make bzImage
make modules
make modules_install
cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/vmlinuz-2.2.12-20+smp2
lilo
In /etc/lilo.conf, there are the lines
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.12-20+smp2
label=linux-smp2
read-only
root=/dev/hdc1
append="hdb=ide-scsi"
But I get the following errors when I boot:
Jul 9 13:20:10 raggy depmod:
/lib/modules/2.2.12-20+smp2/misc/ide-tape.o: unresolved symbol(s)
Jul 9 13:20:10 raggy depmod:
/lib/modules/2.2.12-20+smp2/misc/ide-scsi.o: unresolved symbol(s)
Jul 9 13:20:10 raggy depmod:
/lib/modules/2.2.12-20+smp2/misc/ide-floppy.o: unresolved symbol(s)
Jul 9 13:20:10 raggy depmod: /lib/modules/2.2.12-20+smp2/misc/ide-cd.o:
unresolved symbol(s)
Jul 9 13:20:10 raggy depmod: /lib/modules/2.2.12-20+smp2/misc/cdrom.o:
unresolved symbol(s)
How can I find what these unresolved symbols are? Looking at the modules
themselves, they all (even the ones that don't generate complaints) have
undefined symbols. It looks like these modules expect to find some
module(s) in the kernel or in another module and are failing. What am I
missing?

We're using Adaptec's 2940U2W and it's just fine.

we use a HP-T20 streamer on a symbios 53c815 scsi-controller and since a
few weeks the daily backup fails from time to time with an I/O-error.
when I unload and reload the module again it doesnt detect the tapedrive.
After a few hours or a couple of reboots when I load the module again the
tapedrive is detected again and all is running fine for the next 2-7 days.
IŽll show the kernelmessages here. Maybe anyone can see some details here
that points me in the right direction. (is it a driver-problem, a
controllerproblem, a tapedrive-problem ?)
thanks to anyone

As root, run 'ntsysv' and you can unselect it from running again. This will work
with RH and I guess Mandrake too.

I have a problem regarding this too.
everything works fine as long as I do " insmod ide-scsi" when I am root.
I am able write CDs etc. but I am not able to have this ide-scsi module
loaded automatically.
I am using Mandrake 7.1 and GRUB is my boot loader,
I have specified hdd=ide-scsi in GRUB config file. but I am not really sure
how to handle the /etc/conf.modules file
I would prefer to have a solution where I don't have to recompile my kernel
right now,
Any suggestions are appreciated ,,

Almost fixed. Try scrolling in netscape.
Then there is noise.
I've seen this same bug with the windows drivers
that shipped with the card. The problem has gone away
with the latest windows drivers.
So Its coming along, but the rage 128 support in XF86 is not perfect yet.

Hrm, I thought the Uk used NET3? At least, that's what my Cisco router thinks

Another alternative for gnome is to leave magicdev running and instead
go into the utility "Gnome Control Center" into the Peripherals->CD
Properties section, and in the audio CDs section tell it to run the
command /usr/X11R6/bin/xmcd. Works fine on my system at least. Although
I am beginning to develop a dislike of magicdev for other reasons...

You don't mention
IDE/ATAPI CDROM support - n (not absolutely required - but eliminates a
possible source of problems)
SCSI emulation support - y (under block devices - different from "SCSI
support")
SCSI generic support - m (under SCSI support - also different from
"SCSI support")
By the way, if you are recompiling the kernel anyway, you might as well
compile SCSI CD-ROM support into the kernel. Again, that just eliminates
configuration problems. If you do this, along with the other module
settings as indicated above, then absolutely no entries are required in
either lilo.conf or modules.conf under RH6.1 (that is exactly the
configuration I am running under).

You should probably either delete the previous modules directory or move
them to a new name. Again, not absolutely required, but it just prevents
you from having any leftover old modules from a previous compile mixed
in with your new ones.

There are a bunch of modules in /lib/modules/2.x.x/ that are no longer
valid, of course! You can fix the "problem" by doing this:
cd /usr/src/linux
rm -rf /lib/modules/2.y.x/
make modules_install
depmod -a
This gets people every time. The "make modules_install" target might be
better off doing an "rm -rf /lib/modules/x.y.z/" before installing
everything there, but there are no doubt N+1 problems with that approach
as well.
BTW, those error messages shouldn't prevent you from using your CD-RW if
everything else is correct.

Edit /etc/conf.modules with your favorite text editor, and find the line
that says "scsi_hostadapter". Remove that line, and replace it with this
line:
alias scsi_hostadapter ide-scsi
This will force loading of the ide-scsi module whenever a "SCSI" device is
accessed, which is what you want unless you have a real SCSI bus
somewhere.
Information of the conf.modules file can be found by doing "man
conf.modules", naturally.

From: David Steuber <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

I want to build a computer that will run Linux and do low volume
webserving. It will need to be able to deal gracefully with power
failures.
Some UPSs can connect to the computer in some way to tell the computer
to shutdown when the UPS is getting low. Can they bring the computer
back up again? If so, what Are the top three brands and models I
should be looking at? I only need about 20 minutes worth of backup
power for an ATX based system. No monitor will be on.
Also, can anyone recomend the best brand and source for a Linux
compatible motherboard? I only need a single CPU, 128MB of RAM should
be enough, CPU should be at least as good as a PII 300. If networking
and video can be included on the board, that will be fine. The
machine will be a server, so cheapest possible video and a good 100BT
NIC is desired. I know SCSI is prefered for servers, but I know I can
get away with an IDE drive and IDE CD-ROM. It doesn't take much to
service a fraction of a T1. And IDE is a lot cheaper.
I would like to put the whole works in a compact ATX case with
adequate power supply that is reliable.
If there are inexpensive complete systems that can match the quality
and price of something I build from parts, I would like to know about
them. I am looking for a sub $1000 system. This will not be a
mission critical box that requires hot swapping the motherboard or
anything along those lines. A desktop PC type system will handle the
load just fine.
Administration will be over LAN or SSH once the machine is configured,
so I would like something that won't complain about a missing keyboard
when it powers up.
Think low volume, inexpensive web server with lots of disk space and
reasonable memory + CPU and you have a picture of what I am looking
for.
Thanks.
PS. If you don't like cross-posting, I follow comp.os.linux.misc.
