note that there's a sharp drop-off at the 64kb point on both tests,
but much less sharp at 1 meg, especially on the first test. What I find
curious is that between 64kb and 1 meg there's a continuous and gradual
drop-off which seems to continue at about the same rate right on down
past the 1 meg point, at least in the first test. Does this tell me
something about the cahce-handling on my motherboard, or about how well
the K6-2 uses the cache, or maybe something else? Maybe it simply means
that the L2 cache is of low value for memory writes, less than for reads.

Try logging in as ROOT and entering: "ifconfig eth0 promisc"
My tulip-based network card wouldn't work either until I manually told
it to accept all packets by putting it into "promiscuous" mode.
I only discovered it because my NIC would suddenly come to life when i
started my VMware virtual machine......and cease functioning when I shut
it down. Something in the Vmware startup and shutdown was turing my
network card on and off.
But if I put it into promiscuous mode first......it stays on until I
re-boot.
I'm still trying to work out why this is......but in the meantime, my
system and it's tulip-based NIC is doing very well. I think there error
is mine....but then I'm not omniscient and it should have "just
worked"......
I know kernel 2.4.0 is moving to a different way of implementing network
security...so perhaps the default "don't work in promiscuous mode" is
part of that. No doubt, somehwere in the source tree is a bit of code
that will change it.

This could well not be the source of your problem, but I'll explain anyway.
You need the IP numbers of one (or better 2) machines to be listed in
/etc/resolv.conf which will provide you with a name resolving service.
If you have these from you ISP, you can just edit them in. Trouble is
that a lot of ISP's are not very forward with them. Also, if you use more
than one ISP from the same machine, it is useful for them to be configured
automatically.
I don't use Redhat, but I guess rhppp is some kind of script that calls
pppd proper with a suitable incantation ? If so, adding the option
'usepeerdns' to the pppd command line will try to get the nameserver
IP's automatically when you connect. In a script /etc/ppp/ip-up, they
are then available as environment variables DNS1 and DNS2 (from memory,
check the man page), so the following in /etc/ppp/ip-up :-
echo "nameserver $DNS1" > /etc/resolv.conf
echo "nameserver $DNS2" >> /etc/resolv.conf
Will set things up automagically.
Note that this does not work on some old versions of pppd.

10.* isn't routable on any public network....so if you;re trying from "outside your
firewall" - then you won't get there from here.
But if your address outside the firewall is also 10.*....well that's different.
You could try reading the HOW-TO......for IP MASQ (NAT-ish). I use IP MASQ and
IPCHAINS to do what you are doing.

Peter,
I don't have on board sound but I do have the KT133 chipset which seems to
cause all sorts of problems with sound in general. The soundcard I have is
the Aureal Vortex 2. It has drivers and they do produce sound, but the
machine crashes horribly (in a nasty Windows kind of way) when I use them.
Is it possible that applying some of your instructions could fix my problem?
I notice for instance that you make changes to /etc/modules. I got some help
from a guy who had got the same card working in Linux by doing some fiddling
in /etc/rc.d/rc.local, is it possible that I need to do some fiddling in
/etc/modules myself? You seem to know a lot more about sound set ups than I
do, and particularly the tricky ones, so I thought I'd see if you had any
thoughts.
Thanks

I can't afford to wait. I need a machine urgently and had narrowed it down

It sounds as though rambus and 820 are to be avoided.

More specificly, what USR modem is it? Is it a PCI or a ISA I would
assume ISA, as you were seeing it w/ pnpdump. My worry that your
USR modem is like my gateway/USR (USR modem oem'ed to gateway)
modem which is really a winmodem.
A big question that I have would be what model number is it, and does it
work with win9x/NT/2000? If so can you send me/post the ati1-7 results
(ATI1<CR> ...)? There are some winmodems that work w/ Linux, but you
can find more from http://www.linmodems.org than I can relay.

I have the S3 Trio 3d 4MB AGP card, and my linux crashes all the time

solution is to press the reset button, nothing else works.
I tried the same setup with an old ISA video card and I didn't have this

Did you experience the same with this card?
Do you have any clues who might be responsible for it?
Trio 3d? Linux? Motherboard? Bios setup?
The same computer worked with windows NT in graphics mode and had no

Dustin,
The modem is most likely upgradable to v.90, but I doubt that USR
will support doing the upgrade via linux. The upgrade consists of
dumping a hex file to the serial port after telling it to erase
the flash and accecpt a new image. However, I don't see USR
dedicating a folks to this effort. You best best would be move
the modem to a "windows 95/98" system and run the USR modem
upgrade wizard. It will flash it to v.90 and move it back. An
honest accessment of what you are looking to do would in degreee
of difficulty would be scrubbing your floor with a tooth brush.
i.e. It would take atleast 10-20x more work than with a 95/98
system.
