I used to work a call center that supported these piece of s}{it HPs.
throw it out the window or get your money back while you still can(14
days after purchase). Next time make sure you get the one with AMD gutz
in it. The NICs in them are crap too. you have to talk nice to it
before it will work. nah, they are just crap. HP as went all too hell.
you are right about it being a realtek, but the firmware shows it being
a HP. even the driver from realtek will not work. there was a document
we used to work people around this problem but there wasn't a solution.
I usually told the customers to get another NIC like a 3com or
something a little more intelligent.

I've tried to install Red Hat 7.0 on my computer, but it crashes during the
installation. Is my motherboard compatible with linux and his kernel? My
hardware configuration is:

asus p5a (I've upgraded bios to ver. 1007)
amd k6-350
riva tnt

Does the 2.4.0 kernel work without crash on my computer?

2.2.18 works well for me with the ide patches with a UltraATA/100. I have
seen some posts that indicate problems with 2.4 and Promise controllers.

Hi, all,

I need advice in installing a Linux system in 3 U160 SCSI drives over a
RAID5 controller.
If I make the system boot on the RAID system and a drive fail (not hot
swap), may I replace the drive and
boot the system, or will I end stuck with a system not booting? If this will
bee the case, whitch opions do I
have? Another drive with the boot partition, booting froa a floppy,...

Thanks a lot

Just a thought.
I think all these functions are supported by the Graphics controller built
into the Intel 815 chipset (possibly 810 also).
This is quite well supported in XFree86 3.3.6. (810 supported, patches
available from Intel for 815)
XFree86 4.0 also includes a feature called Xv (v for "video", I don't know
much about it tho)
Is 815 an option for you?

Date: Fri, 19 Jan 2001 21:23:15 +0800

Hi,

My motherboard has 2 ordinary IDE controllers and 2 RAID controllers
supported by HPT370.
I found from Redhat Linux's web site that the kernel can automatically
detect the HPT370 chip for me if I can specify some kernel parameters during
boot time. But what should I enter for the kernel parameters?
e.g linux ide2=0x1e8

I would be grateful if anyone is able to help me solve this problem.
Thanks for your attention.

Jason

Subject: Xerox DocuPrint P8
Date: Fri, 19 Jan 2001 08:21:02 -0500

Hi, hope someone can help with configuring a "Xerox DocuPrint P8" to
work with 7.0 which was a 6.1 upgrade. I'll first submit relevant info
and then submit what problem I'm encountering.

1. The OS was an upgrade form 6.1 to 7.0.
2. I added "alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc" to "/etc/modules.conf"
3. In Gnome's Printer Tool I configured the input filter with both "text
only" and "postscript printers" to no avail.
4. I restarted "lpd" each time I changed the configuration in Printer
Tool.
5. "/var/log/messages" shows "localhost kernel: parport0: Unspecified,
Xerox Docuprint P8"
6. I finally selected the "text only" input filter as there is no entry
for the P8.

The problem is that when I try to print a test page in Printer Tool, I
get a dialog box saying the test page is being printed, but nothing
happens. All physical connections are ok, I using this printer
successfully in WinMe. I get no mail upon boot indicating any printer
problem or the inability to print.

Any help would be appreciated.

thanks,
john

Hi,
My maxtor udma100 drive also works fine in my a7v with suse 7.0 and the eide
bootdisk (follow the instructions in the suse support database at
www.suse.de/en, search for a7v)
But I haven't succeeded to configure X with my geforce 2 mx; none of the

Anyone has been able to configure X (4.0.1) with an a7v, ata100 disk and
geforce 2 mx video card?
Thx

Subject: IBM DTLA-307045 corrupts lilo in MBR and other problems
Date: 19 Jan 2001 15:12:20 +0100

Hi!

I tried to connect the hard drive mentioned above to the
standard IDE controllers of a
Gigabyte GA-586HX (P586-200) running a SuSE 7.0 system.

I was punished with corrupted disks/system.
The lilo installed on the mbr of another IDE disk
was broken after playing around with IBM disk
connected either to the standard IDE controller or
a promise Ultra ATA/100 controller PCI card.
I had to disassemble the whole system and
reboot several times without disks until the system
came up again, but only bootable via floppy.

Has anyone seen such a behaviour before?

==========================

spurious e2fsck errors:

With an ASUS P2B-F (P686-350) board I was able to install
a patched SuSE_7.0
(patch
ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/update/7.0/kernel/promise/linux-2.2.16.SuSE-7.tar.gz)
on the IBM disk which was connected to the standard IDE controller and
use the disk / run linux without the UDMA-100 features.

I ripped off all disks from the gigabyte board, installed
the Ultra ATA/100 controller PCI card, took the
IBM DTLA-307045 from the other system and
retried to boot the gigabyte board, first booting
the SuSE floppy image found at
ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/update/7.0/kernel/promise/k_eide.rpm

The system came up, but boot-e2fsck observed a corrupted disk
and the kernel prompted for a by-hand file system repair
mounting the root file system read-only.

Ignoring this message and remounting (rw) seems to
work fine, but this is not the way I want to use linux.

===============================

Same story with ASUS A7V and on-board promise controller:
No way to boot properly with disk attahced to the Ultra-100
controller: disk size is not detected correctly,
e2fsck reports corupted filesystems.

Any help welcome,

Markus

I haven't try RH 70 or 2.4.0 kernel, but I have the same mother board

Hope this helps.

I'd strongly recommend mandrake 7.2, as it has built in support for the
HPT370 chipset. Otherwise, you will need to to some research. You should
read the HPT 366 howto at http://www.csie.ntu.edu.tw/~b6506063/hpt366/.

Most of the info there relates to the HPT370 as well.

See www.xfree86.org - you should use Xfree86 4(.0.2), with the "nv" driver.

Linux makes CPU "idle calls" when the CPU is "just sitting around",
DOS/windows do not. That's why your CPU runs so much cooler under Linux.

Yes, you have to add the two additional HPT channels via kernel parameters.
The I/O-address(es) may vary. Read the HPT366 mini-HOWTO at:

If you want HW-accelerated 3D you sould get the nvidia driver for XFree
from www.nvidia.com.
Follow the instructions (Really!).
Make sure ALL libGL.xx are replaced by the nvidia-Versions which
correspond directly to the nvidia kernel-driver (NVdriver).
This works with 2.2.x-kernels. A patch for 2.4.x kernels is availabe at
www.linuxgames.com (As far as I remember).

Hope that helps
