This is a little old ...

There is a straightforward solution to try.

UPGRADE!!

Xfree86 4.0 was the first release of the new architecture - since then, the
patch list for the release has grown substantially and lots of hangs, crashes
and other problems. Before doing anything else, get the 4.0.2 release and try
it. I upgraded to 4.0 once the NVIDIA drivers for accelerated 3D appeared, and
life was distinctly flakey. As soon as 4.0.1 was released, I upgraded again and
life suddenly became more stable.

You will also benefit from the new RENDER extension in XFree86 4.0.2 if you
configure your system carefully.

Cheers,
Toby Haynes

Date: Fri, 19 Jan 2001 10:14:02 -0600

[ No one bit when I first posted this, so I'll try it again... ]

I just picked up a CMD PCI-0649 IDE controller card which I have
connected to an internal tape drive.

http://www.cmd.com/ProductInfo.cfm?ProdID=168

I'm running RH7.0 (with all the available updates :) ) on a 2.2.16
kernel.

I was reading ide.txt and, while it looks like I can
specify a command line argument in lilo.conf to probe for it (
append="ide2=0x1e8,0x3ee,11" ), it doesn't seem to come up.

Is there something I need to set in the kernel, or is the ATA/100 chip
not supported in current, stable kernels?

...

OK, I just did some digging and see that there are some patches at
www.linux-ide.org, but are they what I really need (little or no doc on
that site).

Thanks!

Hi jelb,

Please considere Mandrake 7.2 before rtying Corel Whatever Edition. Is
really friendly for Window users and gets installed and configred in a
breeze. Of course, you can always do the "expert-mode install" and get
all the trick available to you, but the easiest install just means
answering a few questions and, voila!, you have a running Linux.

Download the 2 CDs from http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/ and check the
install guide and documentation from
http://63.209.80.231/en/doc/72/en/user.html/index.html (DrakX is the
installation program that starts when you boot with the CD.)

Here http://63.209.80.231/en/doc/72/en/ref.html/index.html you have the
complete reference manual, great when you already have some time with
Linux and want to know more. And also you ahve the Mandrake Users web:
http://mandrakeuser.org/

And, I have to say, Mandrake Linux is a pretty nice distribution. In my
opinion, it's better than RedHat 7.0.

Good Luck!

Salut,
Sinner

Hello Linux-Users,

I've been trying to get my WinTV Go Card working with Linux (SuSE 7).
Although I can see all tv-programms under KWinTv there is no sound output.
My KDE-soundsystem is working because there are several other
soundprogramms which play music correct. Also the mixer values are on
the right position. What can be wrong with my installation??
Thank you for you help

Where would I see the biggest gain in performance on a workstation with
a 500 mHz xeon, 256 megs ram, and 2 7200 rpm scssi disks? Adding a
second cpu, or adding another 256 megs of ram? My biggest complaint is
how a large copy job (cp -a) bogs down the whole system. Perhaps there
isn't much that can be done about this. If so I'd like to hear those
thoughts as well.

the screen when I choose textmode or graphics mode) the system halts. Here's
an error message

This was the message, and then some hex adresses.

I've also tried Slackware 7.1 and I get the same error.

Date: Fri, 19 Jan 2001 11:20:06 -0800

Pardon my ignorance, but
I've found a (Dutch?) DXR2 card that does "video inlay" whatever that means.
I have Matrox G400 MAX (32mb)
in my PC and I wonder does DXR2 driver for Linux

support the inlay version of the card? (Assuming I have the right (26pin?)
connector on G400)
There don't seem to be 15 pin vga connectors on the back.
Thought I'd ask before buying it.
Thank you!

(I have hollywood video decoder currently (DXR3?)) I assume this one won't
play other zones than the first one?

Any positive/negative experience with DXR2/3 anyone want to share?

Does it have a floppy drive? Then you could try a boot-disk and see what
hardware is recognized.

Which I did,...

I have the impression that loadlin (boot from within dos) does not accept this
parameter. I can not use Lilo becasue my linux partitions are after 1024. Can
I do this by manually loading the modules after boot, or is it then already to
late and the CD-writer already assigned to the ide?

OK, I did.

I added the Promise card, but the system still finds the hpt366 as ide2&3
how can I disable it so the system will find the new Promise card??
I tried disabling Ultrdma in bios, no luck.
I tried ide2=0x9400,0x9802 ide3=0x9c00,0xa002 (from /proc/pci for Promise
card), it still finds ide2&3 on the hpt366.
I tried ide4&5 on same address, no luck. Is Linux limited to ide0-3?

You'll boot just fine. Your RAID card will likely set off an alarm, and
beep loudly, but if it's really doing RAID5, you can still boot and work
with one drive gone. The procedure for replacing the drive depends on the
card. In my case, I don't even replace it, I have a pre-designated
hot-spare, the RAID card automatically fills in the spare drive, and then
resumes operation as usual. If your card won't do that, then yes, you shut
down, replace the drive, tell the RAID card to use it instead of the old
one, and boot back up.

I believe RH 6.1 MAY still have the 528MB restriction. This means that
the /boot partition MUST be contained entirely in the first 528MB of the
drive you are booting with. What mount points are you using for each or
your 2,5,5 and 6 gig partitions?
