It`s an SMP system. The first one I`ve worked with, that`s why I'm
curious about these 'new' messages that I've never seen.

Hi,
i have a asus a7v also with Thunderbird 1.1 GHz, IIBM 45GB UDMA100 HD
connected to the promise-controller. I installed RH7.0 with the
ide-parameter-trick mentioned on the above website and afterwards compiled
kernel-2.4.0 with promise-support.
The difference between your and my system is that i´m booting from a hd
connected to the normal VIA-IDE. Thats why i am not using the
ide-parameters in the append-line.
So my UDMA100-hd is hde and is working without problems with the following
hdparm-parameters:
-X69 -m16 -d1

More than likely if your sound card is supported within linux then
your joystick will also be supported but you may have to upgrade your
kernel or recompile it with the joystick support.

Subject: Diagnosing hard crashes
Date: 24 Jan 2001 10:44:35 -0500
My Aptiva 865 running Linux appears to be creaking and crashing more and
more. The symptoms include
- fails to reach the Lilo prompt on boot (i.e. just a flashing cursor)
- spontaneous reboot (as in typing at terminal shell one second,
power-up screen the next)
- hard crashes (total lockup of sound, graphics and keyboard, no Alt-SysRq-
recovery possible).
The system hardware looks like this:
Athlon 650MHz
128MB RAM
S30 Anigma motherboard (AMD 750 Irongate chipset)
200W power supply
Elsa Erazor III video card (basically a TNT2U)
Aureal Vortex 2 soundcard (AU8830 chipset.
DLink Ethernet card 530TX 10 Mbps
Single IDE 20GB drive
8x DVD drive
Single 3.5" floppy drive
Wacom graphics tablet (connected to serial port)
Logitech Wingman Extreme Digital 3D joystick (connected to USB)
Canon BJC5100 printer (paperweight under Linux)
I've compiled and run a memcheck test for 36 hours to test memory previously,
so I'm fairly happy that the memory is good.
Software wise I'm running XFree86 4.0.2 + Nvidia 0.9-6. Sound is via the aureal
drivers off sourceforge (version 1.1.1) which doesn't seem to suffer the same
lockups as the original Aureal drivers. AGP is disabled.
When the crashes occur, there are few or no error messages. I have had some
'bad_slab_magic' and kernel 'Ooops' suggesting memory corruption but I wonder
whether that is a symptom of something else. Recent crashes have shown no log
messages.
This leads me to the following line of thought - either the system is
overheating or the power supply is insufficient to keep the system afloat. Are
there any hardware gurus who have seen something like this before? What should
I investigate next?
Thanks,
Toby Haynes

I can't install my sound card (see below) in Red Hat 7. After I've used
sndconfig, the system response was: "{.../module_name} busy".
The device is: Multimedia Pro 16 IIB-3D (by Aztech/Azt. Labs).
The chip is: 2316R. I have appropriate drivers for Windows and
the card DOES work properly.
I wrote a post a couple of days ago and NOBODY could write even a word on
that matter! I just don't believe there are NO LINUX SPECIALISTS in this
group knowing what to do! I need any information on which drivers I should
use (which card it's compatible with, where to find the drivers etc.).
Pleeease help!!! I'm going crazy!

I asked this odd question because I failed to get it work. I tried Debian
2.1 and 2.2. Both had the same problem. There is no /dev/mouse. I tried
XF86Setup. Within XF86Setup, I tried all combination, still cannot get
it work.
The PC is the Aptiva 2138 with a PS2 2 button Mouse. The mouse and PC
work under MS Windows. I also tried to connect a TurboRing (USB) from
Kengsington, it works under MS Windows but not with the Debian.
I tried to link the /dev/mouse to /dev/tty04, doesn't work. Actually,
I don't know which device should be for the mouse. But none of the
possibility in XF86Setup works.
Thanks in advance.

K.,
There is an option you can use on the "ide2=0xfff0,0xf802,IRQ" command line.
You can place the IRQ at the end as shown.
Good Luck,

You didn't even say what sound card you have. If you want help
you need to supply enough information.
Did you run sndconfig from a text mode login? It isn't going

I also noticed a label: FCC ID: I38-SN96103.
Yet I know that there is a program in DOS (config.exe) which lets you set up
all the stuff like IRQs, DMA channels and so on. They are divided into 3
sections:
1) (attention!) sound blaster (settings: address 220H, IRQ 5, DMA 1),
2) MS Windows Sound System (addr. 300H, IRQ 2), and
3) MPU 401 (addr. 530H).
So I suppose this card must be somehow compatible with SB. With one jumper,
I made the device read the settings from it's EPROM rather than from the
other jumpers.

It really does sound like you do not have a complete Linux installation.
I think you said in an earlier post that you bought Corel Linux instead
of RedHat. If this is true then you should have the installation CD.
I would suggest that you try to re-install Linux from the CD and select
to install everything, if you have enough disk space available. You
certainly
need to install gcc (gcc is the GNU C compiler) and other tools. You
need
these in order to compile source files (written in C) from *.tar.gz
files
downloaded from the internet.
I also suggest looking at this web site
http://sunsite.dk/linux-newbie/index.htm
it is aimed at beginners and I found it useful when I first started. It
provides
information about installing Linux for the first time and what you need.
Have a read of this and then try to re-install Linux, if at all
possible.
Good luck
