My USR sportster does it for no reason. Working one day, no toucheee,
and not working the next. It talks back fine through minicom. Just won't
dial or pick up. It's about 3 weeks between such events.
Of course, turning it off and on again fixes it. An at&f1 and variants
does nothing for it.
My diamond supra 56 does it too, much more regularly. Every week or so.

You can probably do it yourself, off the top of my head, since the
modem cards are the same between internal and external versions. It's
just the mounting that's different. It might be wrth looking inside to
see if there are two-prong hooks for the leds.

Have you compiled Plug-N-Play support into your 2.4 kernel? The new
serial driver is a bit smarter than the one in 2.2. For instance, my
(ISA) PnP modem is automatically detected, activated and put on IRQ 3,
port 0x2f8, and the only thing I need(?) to do with setserial is add the
"spd_vhi" option. The motherboard's serial port is also detected on IRQ
and assigned to ttyS0.

I've heard about this problem before. I'm pretty sure that the problem
is with the 2.2 SCSI layer so you might consider upgrading to a 2.4
kernel. First some background:
a) Your parallel port Zip drive probably uses the imm module. This is a
SCSI host-adapter emulation module.
b) Your CD-RW uses the ide-scsi module. This is another SCSI
host-adapter emulation module.
Now there might be issues with multiple SCSI hostadapters in v2.2
kernels. Alternatively, you might try looking for your ZIP drive on
/dev/sdb4 instead of /dev/sda4. Do you have an other (real?) SCSI
devices in your system? Linux has a nasty habit of renumbering SCSI
devices behind your back and so your ZIP disk might have been "bumped".

I need info on pro's and con's about various how well various SCSI
adapters are supported, works and performs with Linux, typical
problems...
It's not that much about high performance scsi-160 and raid controllers;
rather about SCSI-uw and -80.
Brands like Adaptec, Mylex/Buslogic, Symios, Initio, Tekram...
Specific model/revision experiences are welcomed.

PLEASE REPLY TO ME DIRECTLY VIA EMAIL: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] THANKS!!!
____
i've got an ESS1869 ISA sound card -- at present i do NOT know the
default settings (io, dma, irq) of this card.
(the following details stamped on the board: on the chip: ESS1869S G029,
MDL: SAB-3200, REV: MP1.1-80627, PCB: BA+1-10023K, PBA: BA93-10070C)
i'm told it's soundblaster compatible so i am trying to modprobe sb.o.
but get:
$ sudo /sbin/modprobe sb io=0x220 irq=5 dma=3 dma16=5 mpu_io=0x330
/lib/modules/2.2.18/misc/sb.o: init_module: Device or resource busy
Hint: this error can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including
invalid IO or IRQ parameters
/lib/modules/2.2.18/misc/sb.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.2.18/misc/sb.o
failed
/lib/modules/2.2.18/misc/sb.o: insmod sb failed
$ uname -r
2.2.18
$
i do NOT see any conflicts with io, irq, dma. so i'm not sure where to
play next??
is there something else for me to read? is there something i can run to
get more details on the board so that i can define the correct io, dma,
irq settings to modprobe? etc.?
HERE'S SOME DETAILS...

Hi All,
although all relevant components should not have the slightest prob with
it, I cannot set this resolution up.
The highest working res is 1280x960... If set to 1280x1024, the screen
goes blank.
My system:
Sony E400 19" monitor (detected in sax)
Voodoo3 2000 AGP
xfree 3.3.6
I also have a Geforce2 MX board which I have not yet been able to install

Any idea? If you need more info/details, let me know.

Don't remember which soundchip is on the Allegro, but maybe es1370/71.

In the monitor manual, look up horizontal and vertical timings.
Besides G74, the monitor has a four-figure model mumber (like 9524);
find that number on the back of the monitor or in the manual and try
http://www.danbbs.dk/~monz/monitor-timings.html .
Next, choose Custom monitor and use those values, or the nearest.
Then, edit /etc/X11/XF86Config . Find the Monitor Section and edit the
HorizSync and VertRefresh settings.
When it works, you can use xvidtume to finetune the settings. From the
tool, print your new selected settings as a 'Modeline'. Insert that one
in /etc/X11/XF86Config .

I have an IBM PC 300GL with Allegro sound and an IBM E74 monitor.
For the sound-driver, check out <http://www.opensound.com/>.
My E74 monitor has hfreq = 30-69 kHz and vfreq = 50-120 Hz. It works for
resolutions up to 1280x1024. You should have a manual for your monitor,
the info is in there. Setup your XF86Config-file to match, and you
should be fine.
NB! Verify that the G74 monitor can use the same settings as the E74,
ELSE YOU MAY DAMAGE YOUR MONITOR!
Trygve.

Actually, only the sb module seems to accept the esstype parameter.

Why should this cause a problem - I thought one of the advantages of PCI
was that all cards could share the same interrupt. E.g. I have 4 PCI
cards and from cat /proc/interrupts:
