Subject: RH 7.1, kernel 2.4, and Adaptec 29160

I am trying to get RH7.1 working with an Adaptec 29160 SCSI controller,
which RedHat claims to support right on the outside of the boxed set I
have purchased.

I have not been able to get RH to install on the drive (Seagate
ST318417W), and RedHat tech support (both web-based and phone) have
failed to help me with the problem. In fact, RedHat's phone support
technician just told me the RH hardware group plans to "downgrade the
29160 to 'community support'" !!!

The SCSI bus now only has one device, the Seagate drive. The RH install
script manages to partition the drive (by any of the 3 methods
provided--auto, disk druid, or fdisk), but when it gets to the point of
actually formatting the drive and installing the packages, virtual
console #4 shows that either the SCSI bus/device is timing out, or that
the interrupt handler is not syncing (which results in a kernel panic).
The failure type seems to be a function of the parameters set in the
SCSI bios either for the adapter itself (ID 7) or for the drive (ID 1).
I have concentrated on various combinations of enabling/disabling wide
negotiation and max sync rate for those two devices.

Suggestions on how to get this controller and drive to work?

Thanks. Please respond by email.

I've met some rather picky motherboards that have done this
to me.

Check all of the ribbon cables inside. Improperly seater or
unseated IDE ribbon cables have caused the above symptoms in
machines I've worked on. Also make sure you've got your
master/slave jumpers correct on the new cd-rom.

Check to make sure all of the add-in cards are properly
seated in their slots. Again, I've seen an improperly
seated graphics card cause all of the above symptoms on an
ATX board (even the PS fan bit). It doesn't really make
much sense to me, but give it a try.

Some motherboards and BIOSes are great about beeping out
error codes. Cheaper boards just play dead.

Good luck, and HTH.

Use a different kernel. Apparently RH fouled up on the adaptec scsi
support they compiled. I have seen references to a new install kernel
available on their website. Please check the bugfixes/errata.

Releasing new versions which are unusable directly out of the box. In
particular, glibc and gcc, I believe, were non- or barely-functional
as of RedHat 7.0.

I've never extensively used RH, but many people have commented that
any version ending in ".0" is horrifically unreliable.

Heh - thanks for the hint. I tried that. Same thing, or rather, almost
same thing. It got one extra line ...

Waiting for send to complete.

Or something similar to that - I'm not at the box right now. But still

This probably goes without saying, but you *did* rerun

Hi All,

I have a linux ipchains router connecting to dsl. Red Hat 7.0

I've been able to setup a FTP server using port 21 using IPCHAINS and
ip_masq_ftp... works great

However, using different ports provides better security.

Has anyone had any sucess w/ this type of setup??

Thanks Peter. Unfortunately, the bug fix to which you refer
does not seem to be there, not yet anyway. In fact, at this
very moment the 29160 is currently listed in the RedHat
hardware compatibility list as "certified," the pinnacle of
their compatibility ratings, even higher than the
merely "compatible" assigned to the 2940W driver that has
been working successfully in this box under Linux for about
5 years.

Weird.

Can you ping your own IP address? Can you ping 127.0.0.1?
Can you ping localhost, or your own hostname (the one that's
associated with your IP on the ethernet)?

Just trying to narrow things down a bit.

Correction, using different software provides better security.
Different ports are just ... different.

Can't you use scp? If you want to offer files to the world, use http.
There is nothing to be gained by using an ftp server except perhaps a
few new entries in your passwd file ;-(

Also, the version of Gnome that came with RH 6.0 was VERY

I don't know what light I can shed but I just compiled both in as
modules. So far, the USB_UHCI driver has worked. I have connected

You "know for a fact" this can be done? Have you done it? I'd
be VERY surprised to find out that it's possible, unless I'm
misunderstanding what you're asking. The problem is, each
network interface on the same LAN needs a distinct IP address.
It might be possible to fool Linux into assign the same IP
address to both cards, since it might not know they're
on the same LAN, but if you do this and plug both into the
same switch, I'd be very pessimistic about the ability of
the other machines on the LAN to talk to the one with the
dual interface. You're going to screw up the ARP tables of
every machine on the LAN, no matter *what* OS it's running,
unless my understanding of TCP/IP is really flawed.

Now, getting the OS to detect if eth0 loses connectivity
and reassign its IP and routes to eth1, that might be
possible. But I don't think you can get both of them
using the same IP address on the same LAN at the same
time. TCP/IP doesn't work that way UIAGM. The uniqueness
of each address is *important*.

Of course, you could have two ethernet cards on the
same LAN with *different* IP addresses, no problem,
but in that case if one of them fails its IP address
will be unreachable by the other hosts on the network.

What, about 320x200? And the pixels still won't be square.

You might consider one of those SVGA projector units.
They cost money, but they typically can display real
monitor-quality images on the nearest available flat
white vertical surface at larger-than-monitor size.

Just a thought.

If the reset and power-off buttons don't even work,
I'd say you have a hardware problem. Those buttons
don't rely on software (e.g., the OS) to do their
thing, UIAGM. They're hardware-level controls.

Unless you've got a fake "power" button like the

I would rather save the money if possible.
