Yes, it is an old Asus board (an 8759? maybe) with two Pentium 90 MHz
processors.
Can I request a kernel option in response to the "boot"" prompt at the start of
the
installation? Thanks.

Hello,

Check and see if the /dev/cdrom1 symlink is pointing to the correct place.
Usually setup like:

/dev/cdrom -> scd0      First scsi cdrom
/dev/cdrom1 -> scd1     Second scsi cdrom

I got a sound blaster PCI 128 card, which has the es1371 chipset. I am
trying to get my surround sounds speakers work - and for some reason,
the second audio output doesn't seem to be working.

I did research on google and on the newsgroup and on slashdot.org, and
so far, I am getting conflict answers - from linux supporting only 2
channels to - yes it is supported.

So, my questions:

 - how many channels does Linux support
 - if so, how do I get the second audio output (which I assume to be
channel 3 and 4) working?
 - Any drivers I can use if the one that came with my distribution only
support 2 channels?
 - do I have to recompile the kernel if I want to have more than 2
channel support?

My system is as follows:

Red hat 7.1 (with Kernel 2.4.2)
 Micron Millenia 667 Mhz PC.
 128 Megs of RAM
 Aformentioned Sound Card
 TNT2 Nvidia card
 10 gigs of HD space
  Logitech SoundMan SR0-30 Speakers.

Hi,

I am trying to compile linux-2.4.4 kernel on my linux machine comprised of
an Asus K7M Mobo and an AMD Athlon 500MHz CPU. When configuring the "USB

CONFIG_USB_UHCI or CONFIG_USB_UHCI_ALT (Alternate JE Driver). Can anyone
please shed some lights in this matter?

I have now tried two things motivated by your comments:
1. In response to the boot prompt during install, selected F4 (kernel)
and typed in "linux noapic"
2. Pulled the 2nd Pentium chip and rejumpered the mother board
(Asus PCI/I-P54NP4) to register just one cpu.
Now the system displays on its own that it has "no
local APIC" before it gets into the SCSI bios config or boots
Linux from the floppy. In this case, I just hit enter from the
boot prompt.

Either way, I still am getting SCSI time outs when the RH 7.1
script goes to install the packages, and if I set the SCSI controller and
the SCSI drive to disable wide negotiation and have a 40MHz max
sync rate, I get kernel panic due to sync failure in the interrupt handler.

So I suspect there really is some problem with the driver (possibly in
addition to one with IO-APIC). Thanks again for your suggestion.

There are three buttons on the InWin case. On the
front, Reset and On/Off. On the power supply, an
On/Off. From WinME I can Shutdown or Restart with
no problems - everything works. Only from reboot
(or shutdown) in Linux does the problem occur. If
it was hardware, you'd think it would occur when
restarting WinME too.

No, no, not a troll. I have a legitimate question that has gone
unanswered here in this group. Please let me defend myself.

All I want to know is if the iFeel technology in Logitech's new
optical mice interfere with it behaving as a generic 3-button mouse
under Linux.

Many people have responded to this thread, but none of them talk about
the iFeel mice. It's all about serial, PS/2, USB... None of which had
anything to do with my original question. It's the iFeel that I'm
interested in.

The reason I chose the subject 'No logitech mouse works with any
distribution of linux...' was an experiment on my part to get people's
attention. My previous post with the more appropriate subject of
'Logitech iFeel mice as generic?' went entirely ignored.

This is what I'm learning from all this:

- People are mostly interested in subject lines.

- A post that goes ignored is in fact being responded to in a way by
the group. The response is a unanimous 'I don't know'.

Date: Sat, 05 May 2001 15:01:51 GMT

I'm trying to locate a PCI processor card that I can plug into an existing
PC running Linux that can be used for multiprocessor applications. I'm
trying to build a compact platform for numerically intensive bioinformatics
applications. I'd like to be able to plug in up to 6 cards, each having one
or two processors and 512 MB of memory, running a minimal linux OS and that
can communicate with the main PC to receive data and applications. I/O
would be through a virtual terminal on the main CPU. I know about Beowulf
clusters and the virtual network applications, but I'm trying to build a
compact system that's easier to implement. I need something that's speedy,
so the designs based on the StrongArm processor, etc., aren't really
suitable. Any ideas?

Thanks, ...Dave

Hello,

At the install prompt try the option "noprobe", this might allow you to
install.

======= Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2001=04=24 11:45:44

We've isolated where the problem comes from (it is IRQ routing issues, it
is only on kernels that are not SMP and do not have UP-IOAPIC enabled,
which basically means that the PCI BIOS IRQ routing table is hosed while
the MP IRQ table mapping is OK, which is likely a bug/deficiency in the
motherboard BIOS). Fixing it will likely require an entirely new boot disk
with UP-IOAPIC support enabled (which also means all the modules have to be
rebuilt and will result in new driver disks as well :-(

I have an Everex 486 SX/33. Two days ago, it booted up fine, but now upon

The computer is a 486 with AMI BIOS (from 1986/7), and upon research of

duh. :)

Anybody know how to fix this or how it may have came to happen in the
first place? Any sugestions would be appreciated.

Don't know about the HPT370, but if you can use the device as an ide
controller sure it will work fine. The promise raid controller works
very well as an ide controller. I suspect the same is true for the
hpt370. Kernel 2.4.x has support for this controller without raid.

One other note the software raid in Linux is faster than the software
raid for my promise controller and has lower CPU utilization.

I learned this the hard way also I guess this question belongs in an
faq somewhere.

Good luck.

Dan,

You are ready for a new mother board. On your MB is a device called a
DMA controller, it sounds like the POST has determined this is failing. You
should be able to acquire a similar MB or better for $10 or so. I would look
for a Pentium MB if you are going to need to replace your current one.

Hello,

More then likely the DMA controller integrated into the motherboards
chipset has failed. Only way to fix it is to replace the motherboard. :-(

You would need a hardware diagnostic program, like AMIDIAG or similar to
find out for sure what has failed.
