Penguin Computing perhaps? Their site is www.penguincomputing.com. You
may also want to take a look at Linux Hardware Solutions (www.linux-hw.com)
and ASL Workstations (www.aslab.com). No doubt there are many others.
The ads in a recent Linux Journal could be another source for names.

I am not a customer of any of these companies, I am just aware of their
existence.

Try this:

$ cd /dev
$ ls -l cdrom
lrwxrwxrwx   1 root     root            3 Jan 26 02:43 cdrom -> hdc

$ ls -l hdc
brw-rw----   1 root     disk      22,   0 May  6  1998 hdc

Have root give 'other' the same permissions to the device as 'user' and
'group',

# chmod o+r+w /dev/hdc

and see if this works for you.

Ben

        You can't do that, at least not with a SINGLE channel SCSI adapter,
like I suspect you have.

        You can do this:

  DISK ------ INT-68 ----- adapter ----- EXT-68 ----- JAZ

        There, the terminators are on either end, one on the hard disk, one on
the JAZ drive. If you want to have ANOTHER SCSI cable connected, it
must be on a seperate adapter, or a seperate channel.
        Just one of the things that annoyed me in the past as well...

Actually i just installed RH5.2 on someones system; all the devices he had were
detected by the setup programs, X worked right off the bat, it was able to find
the network card, and sndsetup said this is what you have let me test it.
Everythign went great.

Subject: Changing  the ethernet driver
Date: 19 Mar 1999 08:44:37 GMT

I have an EtherExpress Pro\10+ loaded on my computer. It worked just fine
under 2.0.36, but it loaded the eepro driver. Now that I have upgraded to
2.2.3 it doesn't work but it is loading the eepro100 driver. I think this
my problem but I cannot find out either how to load the eepro back on
instead or what the parameter list is for the eepro100 to get it to work.
With the eepro I had to use these lines in my conf.modules file...

alias eth0 eepro
options eepro iox0x210 irq=11

When I enter these into the eepro100 it tell me io is an invalid parameter.
Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance,
Joe Cloutier

The good news is that you don't need a patch if you upgrade your kernel to
2.2.1.

The bad news is that I cannot mount the MO devices with kernels 2.2.2 and
2.2.3.  Who knows why?

Subject: IO & ext2-fs errors on multiple drives w/AHA2940
Date: 19 Mar 1999 07:55:52 GMT
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hello;

Using Slackware linux with 2.0.35 kernel, we've recently started receiving
error messages regarding a couple of our SCSI drives. We're using an the
following scsi card:

(scsi0) <Adaptec AHA-294X Ultra SCSI host adapter> found at PCI 17/0
(scsi0) Wide Channel, SCSI ID=7, 16/255 SCBs
(scsi0) BIOS enabled, IO Port 0xe800, IRQ 10
(scsi0) IO Memory at 0xffaff000, MMAP Memory at 0x8805000

We started receiving errors with a 4 gig Seagate drive, and switched to an
alternate drive in the machine (a 4 gig Micropolis) with little change in the
results (instead of device 8:12 erroring, it's now 8:13). We've umounted and
e2fsck'd the drives which seems to solve the problem, but only momentarily.
Once the drive activity picks up, these errors are getting generated and
certain activities (cp, du, etc) are producing I/O errors. There are two
other drives in the machine which are fine (ie, no error messages).

If anyone's got any ideas about what might be causing this, and even better,
how to solve this, let me know. Or even just suggestions that might lead to a
revelation would be good. If I need to provide more info, make it known.

Try also the "hpdj" driver; it supports the goofy ret modes, too, and
will work differently than the cdj* ones. Wether the difference is
better or not, I don't know.

You could use loadlin in autoexec.bat to automatically load Linux once the
modem has been set up.

Like the Lucent PCI modems? All they need is a driver, which,
unfortunately, needs programming specs, which is more than just a little
on the tough side to come across. Most typically, the companies that make
these things are utterly silent when requesting programming information
for these things.

In my experience, ISA modems and external modems are the ones that will
work just fine with Linux (I haven't done much looking around, but most of
the ISA modems I've seen work just fine with Linux/non-Windows OSs)

I recommend that you get an external modem. They're more expensive, but
there's no question as to whether or not it'll work with Linux.

You use PPP. :-)

The ISDN line card should just be another device to Linux, which can be
accessed the same way as /dev/ttyS0 or /ttyS1 would be for a dial out
modem.

There's a pretty good how-to provided with most distributions - have a
look for it.

Subject: NIC card not initializing
Date: 19 Mar 1999 07:51:47 GMT

Greetings all,

I'm trying to connect my Linux Box to a TCP/IP network. I have a 486DX4 100
with 32MB RAM, DTC 2278E controller, ATI Mach32, and an ISA SMC Elite
Ultra Network card (83C790QF Chipset). I tried using the Kernel
configuration utility under Xwindows. I chose the SMC Ultra module, and
configured the card properly. I then used the Network configuration utility
to setup the ip addresses, net mask, etc. The card did not initialize during
lilo boot. I also tried "ifconfig -a", with no output. I then swapped the
card with a new 3COM Etherlink III card and ran the configuration utilities
again. The same thing happens. I then typed "cat /some directory/proc" to
check for address conflicts, there was none. I also can't find eth0 in the
/dev directory. The HOWTO documents says to recompile the kernel to use the
ethernet modules. The documents says to untar the kernel source file in
"/usr/src" and run make config or make menuconfig. I don't see any kernel tar
files and "make config" yielded an error. How can I recompile the kernel
to use the ethernet module? Any help would beappreciated?

Thank You,

James

P.S. I also inserted, "append eth0=10, 0x300" in lilo.conf. Nothing happens

The sound is working (incl recording). But MIDI is not working at all. I
get the error /dev/sequencer not supported with playmidi.

So I moved /dev/sequencer and linked it to /dev/dsp. Now I get the error
no sound card found when I do playmidi ! Sound (.wav files) still work.

I am using the 1371 driver that comes with linux (RH 5.2)

If your using Xfree, you'll need to update it to the latest version
(3.3.3.1). Then just grab the SVGA Server off of their site
(www.xfree86.org), and you should be all set. The SVGA Server supports all
RivaTNT based cards in the 3.3.3.1 (and later) version.

Hope that helps.

Wrong.

* Under Linux 2.0 and previous versions, lp devices were bound to ports
at
* particular I/O addresses, as follows:
*
*      lp0             0x3bc
*      lp1             0x378
*      lp2             0x278
*
* The new driver, by default, binds lp devices to parport devices as it
* finds them. This means that if you only have one port, it will be
bound
* to lp0 regardless of its I/O address.

This is not a modem at all. It is a sort of data pump with a VXD driver
for Win* which does the real work. This is a WinModem, and you'll have
to throw it away if you ever want to go online with any other OS besides
Win* .

mylex dac960 series is supported. but it isn't rock solid on k6 systems. it
