I haven't found that to be always true, but I'm always looking at high-end
SCSI boxes, So(?). Anyway, where's a good place to buy inexpensive
computers? I would prefer not to deal with an auction, but that might not
be true for the original poster.

Sheesh! I'm running a DIY box. I'm just trying to see answers

I'm currently using AGP G400's on two computers and a PCI G200 on another. I
do have an older machine (Pentium-II 233Mhz on an LX motherboard) that the G400
will not work in, but that is a case of incompatiblity with the motherboard,
not Linux (G400 only supports AGP 2x and AGP4x, while the motherboard on the
Pentium-II only supports the original AGP 1x speed). The only other problem
I've seen with the G400 is getting the optional digital flat panel output to
work with my motherboard (ASUS P2B-DS), it works with my other computer. Note,
if you have a G450 instead of G400, you need Xfree 4.0.3, while G400's will run
on any X released in the last year or two (3.3.[56]/4.0.x).

Subject: Video Card for Asus P5A?
Date: Fri, 18 May 2001 18:26:32 -0500

I've got the following setup:
P5A Mobo (Bios 1007)
AMD K6-2 400
Win2K/Linux
192 Meg Ram
Soundblaster Live Value
Linksys Etherfast NIC
ATI Charger 4Meg Video card
Micron PC 700mx (17" Trinitron Flat screen)

I'm looking to upgrade my video to better match my monitor (better
refresh rates) and run some games. Yes, I know I need a new system, but

I want to step this one up a little (Gaming/Graphics work). I plan to
get a new machine in the next 3-12 months, and this one will become a
Pure Linux box.

I got a Hercules GeForce 2MX AGP, but it kept causing my machine to
randomly hard-reset! Searches through the newsgroups turned up the
"P5A's don't get enought power to the AGP port for most Nvidia cards on
a consistent basis" response. I've seen people recommend 3dfx cards
(Voodoo 3 mostly) and some of the ATI pre-Radeon cards (Rage/Fury,
etc). I'm leaning towards a Voodoo 3 AGP card, but I wanted to see if
anyone had any more current recs. Most of the postings relating to my
Mobo I saw were older, or from people running Win 98SE.

I don't need the World's Finest Video Card, just something better than
what I've got. I'd like something with 32meg of ram (just seems to make
sense), and that won't force me to replace it when this machine becomes
a linux box.

TIA,

There is no SANE backend (that I'm aware of) for this scanner yet.
However, there is some software available to use the scanner. It is
available from:

I hope you're not referring to me in your 'freeloading' scope. I paid
several thousand dollars for the hardware; I don't think its too much
to ask to be able to control the brightness (which all other vendors
allow via a hardware knob, btw).

read the Changes file from the 2.2 distribution, it's available at

http://ftp.[yourcountrycode].kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.2/Changes (IIRC,
browse around if I've got it wrong :) replace [yourcountrycode] with
uk,dk,fi,fr,us or whatever is relevant.

Hmm, having had a peek, it appears not to be available without looking in
the source code, so either look in /usr/src/linux/Documentation/Changes if
you've got the 2.2.x source installed, or have a look at
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/sam.penny/Changes.from.2.2.19

IIRC it's a difficult but not impossible to solve problem with making the
psu powerdown in SMP mode, of course it _should_ be possible to go back to
UP mode but there are probably reasons why it isn't worth the effort (I
mean, how often do those with SMP boxen actually stop playing with them and
want them to power down?! ;)

Should I rebuild the kernel with oldproc turned off or should I upgrade to

Anybody tried running Linux (RH or SuSe) on Tyan's new dual athlon board? I
have tried installing RH 7.0 and SuSe 7.0 and both hang during post-install
boot up. I think it is the place where the cpu/raid timing tests take place.
I would be interested to hear if anyone has managed a full boot yet. My next
step is to try to boot a previously installed (on intel) 2.4 kernel disk and
see what happens .......

As of 2.4.4-ac5, the GFXP is usable under Linux. Should only get better
from here...

You're still best off with a SBLive though.
