On a similar subject, I get this high pitched beep coming from the computer
every couple of minutes. It's different from the ctrl-G beep (lasts longer
- about a second - and it's f*cking annoying). Any ideas on how to get rid
of it ?
It only starts up after I've logged into KDE - so it must be due to some
process .... ?

I have a SiS motherboard working well with linux 2.2.x. While upgrading to
kernel 2.4.x the kernel did not start, even show no messages like
Linux version 2.4.5 (root@p750) (gcc version 2.95.2 19991024 (release)) #29
Sun May 27 17:56:33 CEST 2001
I looked into the source and I think it could be the asm-code before
start_kernel (init/main.c:508) or after that, because the console is
initialized sometime later. Is someone else having that problem?
Here is /proc/cpuinfo and /proc/pci.

Go to www.redhat.com and choose Bugzilla. Look at bug report
37812 to see if it is at all relevant.
There is a problem with the 2.4 kernels which under some circumstances
lead to an interrupt conflict at irq 12. This conflict can be
there even if you don't find the interrupt in /proc/interrupts.
For example, using RH7.1 on my Winbook XL laptop, if I run
pcmcia, then irq 12 is selected by the pcmcia controller. Even
if I stop pcmcia, at the hardware level, it keeps the interrupt.
This results in an interrupt conflict when the PS/2 mouse is
used. That interrupts should be reserved for the mouse, but
if the mouse is not then being used, the system won't know it.
My situation was quite a bit different from yours, but the
problems may be related. My workaround was to avoid the
use of irq 12 by other pci devices by the kernel directive
pci=irqmask=0xafff
This can be passed directly to the kernel at the lilo boot
prompt or with
append="pci=irqmask=0xafff"
in /etc/lilo.conf. (Don't forget to run /sbin/lilo after
chaning lilo.conf.)
But I don't know if that will fix your problem.

I am still trying to figure out if the modem included

Hi,
Could you please guyz help me installing 3Com 3c905cx NIC. I have the
drivers sources downloaded from 3Com site and I can't compile them because
of multiple error messages. Those drivers are tested on kernels 2.2.12 and
2.2.5 but mine is Debian 2.2.18pre21. Could that be the problem?
I also tried 3c59x drivers. They install OK and I can ping the card on
static IP address which I provided, but I can't ping anything else on the
network. Is this a driver problem or there's something else I could try?
I used Realtek card on this box before, but it's a 10Mb card. Now I connect
the Debian box to 100Mb hub and I run Snort. Can you tell me, will a 10Mb
NIC in promiscuous mode see those IP packets that travel between two 100Mb
nodes?
Thank you,
Andrey

I have always found that it works best to put any removable drives AFTER
any hard drives. But that was from the time when older BIOS could not see
cdrom devices and would move hard drives down in the drive order to what
it thought was a vacant slot. You might try swapping your 2nd hard drive
and cdwriter to see if that helps. Then both hard drives could use DMA on
ide0. And if either your cdriter or cdrom on ide1 do not support DMA, it
would not affect your faster hard drives.
For example my hdc on one box did not seem like using DMA for any period
of time. But I don't know if that was because it was an old drive or due
to the old cdrom that shared that channel.

Subject: DataRequest - I/O error - LBA problem?
Date: 1 Jun 2001 11:01:56 -0700
Out of desperation, I am having to post a plea for help. I am having terminal
problems accessing the hard drive on my laptop. Though I can access the drive,
I cannot write to it without the following errors.
==========
hda: Read_Intr: Status 0x59 {DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest error}
hda: Read_Intr: Error=0x40 {Uncorrectable Error}, LBAsect=474191, Sect=196928
end_request: I/O Error, dev 03:06, Sector 196928
==========
Now I am probably barking up the wrong tree here, but these are my current thoughts:
* I know that i do NOT have a real hardware problem. DOS works flawlessly,
I have now tested this extensively (and with different hard disks)
* Since other people have reported that their machines work perfectly with Linux,
it is unlikely to be a controller/hardware problem.
* I have tried as many kernels as I can, both compiled by me, and provided
with various distro's. Versions 2.1 thro' to 2.4. All fail.
* As I cannot even fdisk without problems, I am now assuming it is an addressing
problem.
Now I was under the impression that the kernel automatically determines all the
correct disk geometry. However, I have no option within the bios to set the disk
size or addressing mode. Therefore, could DOS be talking LBA, and Linux CHS
(or vice versa)?
If this is the case, could someone set me right on the path to take to get this
machine talking to me please?
Booting up gives the following messages (if this helps)
hda: Tosh.., 503MB, CHS=1023/16/63
ide0 at 0x1f0-0x1f7,0x3f6 on irq 14
Hopefully, someone out there will know what is going on here. I'd appreciate
a hand if possible. Cheers.
Phil.

Actually, it DOES reflect the state of the drive. The hdparm -i
option
simply formats a response from the disk drive. If I issue the
hdparm -X option of set the UDMA state of the drive, the
asterisk moves up and down the list to the appropriate setting.

I've reviewed the pdc202xx.c driver code, and there is definately
UDMA/100 support there. What ISN'T there, is the code to report
whether the driver is in a UDMA mode above 4. Without adding
the code myself, I'll have to assume that the drive is in UDMA mode 5,
based on the hdparm results.

Does Linux have an IO scalability issue. We here have 25 drives attached to
a server with two fibre controller cards. The max thruput we can arrive at
is around 40MB/s, thats like 5% PCI efficiency. If I have the same
configuration under windows, I can easily do 250~300MB/s using the same HW
configuration. Any clues!!
