Subject: Diamond Fireport not found on boot
Date: Sat, 26 Dec 1998 03:00:34 GMT

I am running slackware 3.6 with a Quantum scsi harddrive and toshiba
cdrom. The hard drive is ID 0 with the cdrom at ID 2.

The problem is that on bootup, my Diamond Fireport 40 is not found
when I compile a custom kernel. I am using the 2.0.36 sources.

I was able to install slackware using a bootdisk and an confused why
my custom kernel is not working. When I looked at the directory
structure during compile process, I saw that the
/usr/src/linux/drivers/scsi directory had a ncr53c7,8xx.o but not an
53c8xx.o. I do not know if that will help. My only thought is that
the kernel is compiling without support for the fireport card, but I
do not now how to make it suport it.

I have compiled kernels successfully before but they were all IDE and
not scsi.

Any suggestions.

I've got a Soundblaster PCI 128 installed on my PC.

sndconfig seems to pick up the right card, but when it tries to play a
sound, it always
says it's busy. Has anyone else had any luck getting this to work.
Could it be that I
need to compile sound into the kernel? How can I tell if it already has
been?

In any case, any and all help would be appreciated (the stuff I found on
linux.org and
supplementary links did not help).

please send comments by email as well.

no way,

Check at http://www.sunsite.unc.edu/Linux

development support for linux has just began, so be patient....

I have also a dvd-rom and can't use it under linux :-( that's a shame.

I have tried the color quickcam under linux and have found it too slow.
So i am searching a fast camera (30 fps should suffice) supported by

I have heard something about panasonic eggcam, is that true ?
What is the name of the kernel 2.1 module that support it ?
How do we program it ?
Can we use it under a stable kernel ?

Here is what I did to solve this problem. I recently brought a used Mac PPC to
do my homework for college. This old computer only had a 500 MB hard drive, but
the the drive had a lot of useful programs on it. I bought a 3 gig. hard drive
and a mini tower pc case. I then got a internal SCSI cable that has a centronic
port on one end that I could put through one of the ports in the back of mini
tower case. I just put the new hard drive in the mini tower case and plugged in
a power source, put the internal SCSI cable on, and then ran a cable from the
port on the back of the Mac to the back of the mini tower case. This set up has
worked flawlessly for months now! One thing I like about it is that next
semester when I will probably have to by a Zip drive to take my homework to
school I can buy an internal one and put it in my home made SCSI tower and save
some money too!

This is the way I print on both sides. I tranalate all the files I want to

and reinsert into printer, mark all the even pages, and print them.

Hi,

I received a Hewlett-Packard 697C printer as a Christmas gift. I am
wondering if this printer can be used with Linux. (HP's website is
absolutely useless, and the manuals that come with the printer are

Any and all information about using this printer with Linux would be

Subject: Modem config problem- please help!
Date: Sat, 26 Dec 1998 01:05:32 -0500

I've been trying to config my CPI Viva 56K (K56 flex) modem under
Linux. I've disabled PNP, and now have the modem at COM 2, with I/O
02F8-02FF and IRQ 3 (under Windows device manager). In Linux, I have
everything config'd for /dev/cua1. I checked /proc/ioports and
/proc/interrupts and found the settings for I/O to be serial(auto)
02f8-02ff and serial(auto) 03f8-03ff. There weren't any settings in
interrupts for either serial or modems. Now, when I try to enter
minicom, it still let's me in, but no command prompt to use (frozen).
And when I try to exit minicom, after 'resetting modem', it hangs up
with a blank xterm screen(which I have to either kill or close).
Earlier, I was getting the message "device locked".
What am I missing? Is there something I need to edit here (such as
IRQ's), or in the kernel?

Thanks in advance!

To anyone who has the AOpen FM56-H modem, guess what
its a Winmodem! The box has nothing to lead to believe it is
ia Winmodem, and I had even checked their web page for
info shortly after buying it. Well, they recently upgraded their

also known as a Winmodem". Damn! I guess its time to go shoppping. :-(

I am a little unclear on you situation, if the cable in
question is coax, kinda like cable-tv cable, then the answer
is a qualified yes. If it is Rj45 (looks more like a phone cable)
then the answer is no. Hope this helps.
WRT 10base2 (coax) the line needs to be terminated at both ends of the
network, whether that is 2 machines, or 200.

while looking for a fix to a problem similar to yours (see my posting titled
'Rx frame corrupted'), i came across an old copy of the ethernet-HOWTO (dated
middle of 1998, i think). it had the following fix for the Rx frame problem
for the EtherExpress card. i took this straight from that document:

One reported hack/fix is to change all of the outw() calls to outw_p(). Also,
the driver is missing promiscuous and multicast modes

the adjustment mentioned above is to be applied to the eexpress.c file. at
this moment, i am experiencing a machine lockup due to the Rx frame error, so
i can't telnet in and apply the fix. however, i am hoping to do so sometime
this weekend. i will send you an email if i get any sort of result.

the thing is, on the latest version of the HOWTO i believe this fix was not
mentioned. the only thing that i got was that the EtherExpress card was
supported. oh well...

merry christmas,
faiz

The information has been out there for some time. There is no reason to
feel duped. People need to research their purchases.

It's not fraud to *not* tell the consumer what is in there machine. It is
fraud if they lie about it. If you ask them if the HW is Win9x only, and
they say "I don't know", buy elsewhere. If they say "Yes", make them
replace it with non-Win9x HW, at no extra cost, or buy elsewhere. Always
be prepared to walk away. That is why I have no attachment to Dell,
Compaq, Gateway, or any of those other alleged "Computer super retail
outlets". Ya can't trust em.

Don't buy from these companies.

Again, do the research, and avoid companies that include winmodems( or any
other Win9x only HW ) in their machines.

The consumer must take it upon themselves to find the information. Or at
least *listen* to the facts. I worked with a guy that talked about getting
a winmodem for his machine. I advised against it until he found out what
exactly is a winmodem. He went ahead and bought it anyway. Oh well, live
and learn.
