I got a brand new computer yesterday, and it won't install Linux right.
It's a K6-2 350 on an Iwill XA100 motherboard (with an Ali chipset and
AMI BIOS and 64MB of PC100 SDRAM), and I don't think the rest of the
hardware matters. I FIPS'ed the 8GB disk into a 3.6GB Win98 FAT32
partition, a 100MB root partition, a 64MB swap space, and a 4.2GB /usr
partition.
The first time I tried to install Red Hat 5.2, it went fine except that
while copying Emacs, it hung. So I rebooted and tried again. Then it
gave me an error message, about fatal signal 11. I ignored it and tried
again, and this time it worked. I logged in, messed around, shut it
down. When I came back and booted it, it stalled at INIT_27 or something
in the boot messages. It continued doing it, until I decided there was
nothing to do but reinstall. Now it's still giving me sig11's. I looked
in the Red Hat manual and it says something about it, and gives a URL:
http://www.bitwizard.nl/sig11/ . I read the page, and decided that it
was telling me that the problem was the BIOS. So I messed aroung with
it, and changed the External Cache to Disabled, and the DRAM timing to
Fast from Normal. None of this helped anything, and at some point it
added the problem of not being able to find the RPMs. I have no idea how
to fix this, except to return the computer. I don't want to do that,
although I will as a last resort.
TIA,
David Boyk

Is it a Windmodem? If not it *should* work. Check to see if it's DOS
compatable, if so that's a good sign. Basicly if you can control the whole
thing using basic AT commands and not funky proprietary Windows crap then
your good to go. Hope this helps.

Subject: Linux on Sparc 1+
Date: Sat, 26 Dec 1998 01:36:01 GMT
Dear Linux fans & gurus,
I have a Sparc 1+ clone by CompuAdd and I wish to install Linux on it. Just
to get my feet wet before I put time and $ into it. Is this a good idea?
Here are my concerns:
- I have no CD-ROM on it. It only has a tape drive. However it has SunOS
installed on it and I suppose I can download the Linux install onto a tape.
I have a SCSI CD-ROM that I can rip off my PC, but I have been told that
Sparc is very picky about CD-ROMs. Please comment on this.
- Right now the machine has SunOS on it and it is connected to the net.
Does this help me move to Linux any simpler.
- How much RAM do I need?
- Is this a good idea altogether, or should I junk this box and get a PC.
It's a pretty box, though, with a 17" monitor.
Please cc to my e-mail when you respond ([EMAIL PROTECTED]).
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
I am trying to get a Lexmark 3200 to print on my Debian 1.3 box, but no
success so far. All that happens is that the printer formfeeds once when
Linux is booting and whenever I unload and then reload the lp module. Am I
facing a configuration problem or is this printer a no-go on Linux?

The second CPU should be automatically detected on power up. I
have an older Tyan dual CPU board, and that's the way mine works.
When you bought the second CPU, did you make sure that it was the
same revision as the first one? That's a requirement to make sure
the two chips are compatible.

ATi isn't supported for sure, because ATI has clearly stated that they
*will not* release specs to the Linux communty so we could write a
driver. And we can't hack the damned card too because AFAIK it isn't
available yet.
RivaTNT is supproted in XFree86 3.3.3, but RedHat 5.2 included 3.3.2.
You'll have to upgrade manually, but TNT works with Linux.

Hi,
One of our machines has just been upgraded to 1GB RAM. We are running
kernel 2.0.36 (RH5.2). The memory is autodetected just fine, but
immediately afterwards the kernel enters panic mode and the boot process
hangs. I can boot the machine just fine with "mem=999M", but how do I
make the kernel work with the entire 1GB?
I am assuming that I need to change some constant in one of the kernel
include files and recompile. If this is the case, can someone tell me
which file/constants should be changed?
Thanks,

Usually if you leave old modules there, you will get unresolved symbols.
rm -r /lib/2.x.XX that should remove all the old modules, then compile,
and install the new ones.

Anyone knows how to fix it?

I have a 4dwave card made by Jaton. They havn't updated the drivers from
the originals so I've been looking around. I found 4.05.2025 off of some
asian web page. On the trident web page only 2013's available. What is
the latest driver version? Do you happen to know what 2025 fixes?(It didn't
come with release notes). The rest of the questions I have, I can practically
read off the side of the box/feature list: What happend to the 8MB patch set?
If not done already, when will DLS be implemented? Is 'AC97 3D Stereo
Enhancement' implemented automatically?(The tab is in the audio properties but
enable 3d enhancement check box & depth slider are still not selectable with
it defaulted as unchecked). Does the 4dwave drivers translate aureals
a3d?(why I ask: a3d.dll). With the 2025 drivers, the qsound tab in audio
prop. has a 'default environment' pull down list with several to choose from:
Any way to add environments?(I'm interested in a cockpit environment for all
the wwii sims out). The fm/gm/gs emulation is really terrible(just about
sounds like everything is being played with the piano sample:P). Did I just
not install something properly? If by design, is it being worked on so fm
sounds like fm & gm/gs sounds like midi does in windows? I'm not shocked by
something being released too soon, ala savage3d, but I'm also hoping for
a recovery like s3 did with their drivers.
OK, let the answers rip:)

FWIW, the DE-528CT (10MB only) came with a Linux driver in source code

How does it do something "transparently?" He's talking about modem

going to be tranparent in the sense of not bogging response.

Sounds like a job for ppptcp, which establishes a secure (encrypted)
virtual circuit between machines, as long as they have a connection. I
use it to work inside firewalls, with proxyarp so my machine appears to
be inside even when it's not.

The answer to all these questions (and more :) lie in an article in the Oct

Martin:
You should have no problem. I installed on a very similar box with RedHat
5.2, and it was flawless.

This web page:
http://www.modemblaster.com/product/di5601.html
says that the modem will work under MS-DOS, which is indeed a good sign.
I don't know about the sound card side, though. Since it's Sound Blaster
compatible, it ought to work.
